 Staghorn and elkhorn corals are undersea architects, creating reef structures that support vast varieties of fish, sponges, lobsters and other marine creatures. Hit hard by disease, global warming and other stresses during the past 30 years, these corals have declined to a few isolated patches in the warm, sun-splashed waters that run from southern Palm Beach County to the islands of the Caribbean.But beginning with a chance discovery off Key Largo, where staghorn coral was found growing in an undersea farm for commercial aquarium rock, scientists have begun raising these corals in offshore nurseries with the goal of transplanting them into the wild... Many people are SCUBA Diving and realizing the significance that freedom underwater makes in their lives both physically and pyschologically. Lionfish (Pterois Volitans) have been documented along the entire United States East Coast from Florida through Massachusetts, East to Bermuda and South throughout the Bahamas and in other Caribbean Islands such as Turks and Caicos and Cuba. The expansion has been extremely rapid and exponential in scope. We have seen some Lionfish ha e been located on the Captain Dan and Sea Emperor, also some divers have seen them off Boca Artificial Reef.

Experience Level: BOW Depth Range: 50' - 70' Activity: Penetration Activity: Navigation Trip Fees: $60.00pp {Includes Rental Tanks} This 165' retired U.S. Coast Guard Cutter WWII submarine chaser had fallen on hard times as restaurant cruise ship and already having sunk at her dock twice before was finally decommissionned in 1991. Commissioned in 1934 from Point Pleasant, VA as the "USS Nemesis" the cutter performed coastal watch and lifesaving duties from her home port of St. Petersburg, FL her entire career within the USCG. The 337 ton, rivet steel ship (built before the time of welded steel ships) was permaently stationed in St. Petersburg, where she served and protected Florida. Although not the fastest ship in the fleet, she was perfectly designed for search and rescue missions in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic. The constant battering of hurricanes kept the "USS Nemesis" busy picking-up survivors from disabled and weather-beaten vessels, towing strickened ships to safety. From 1934 to 1942, she saved hundreds of lives, as well as, millions of dollars worth of property. |
