JEWELER JAMES AVERY REFLECTS ON HIS 90 YEARS
While most everyone in South Texas is familiar with the work of James Avery, few know much about the man himself.
Avery, whose 63 eponymous jewelry stores span eight (soon to be nine) states, recently turned 90. And while he no longer runs the family-owned business, having surrendered the reins in 2007 to his son Chris, now the CEO, he remains closely involved in its operations. He still maintains his office at the company's 25-acre compound in Kerrville, coming in almost every day to sketch ideas, attend design review meetings and act as the public face and ambassador for the $156-million-a-year business. "I don't want to micromanage the boys," he says of Chris and another son, Paul, who serves as executive vice president of sales. "I don't want to say, 'Oh, you're doing it wrong. Here's how to do it better.'"
Then, with typical self-effacement, he laughs and says, "So I spend most of my time just dilly-dallying around, sketching, things like that."
To say that Avery is grandfatherly in appearance is unnecessary. Most nonagenarians are. But with a full head of gray hair and a confident, even regal bearing, he could easily pass for being a quarter century younger. He's a natural storyteller and has a lifetime of tales to share, many happy, some sad.

A trial was ordered Friday for Staff Sgt. Luis A. Walker, a Lackland AFB instructor charged with having sexual contact with 10 recruits.
The action punctuated Air Force statements condemning such behavior, but whether the military has taken the problem seriously enough is a matter of some debate.
Since 2001, 10 instructors at Lackland, home of Air Force boot camp, have been convicted of having sex with trainees. All were sentenced to 12 months or less in jail.
Many details of those cases aren't known, but they generally involved consensual sex between adults, which is inappropriate under Air Force professional conduct rules.

PRO-LIFE RALLY IN AUSTIN DRAWS THOUSANDS TO TEXAS CAPITAL, INCLUDING MATT BEEBE, TEXAS STATE REP IN DISTRICT 121
Several thousand people flooded the capital Saturday in support of recently passed anti-abortion legislation.
My bride Amy, our son Honor, our newborn daughter Mercy and I joined Matt Beebe, candidate for Texas State Rep. District 121, and his wife Nicole and their children Hannah and Joshua to march and rally for the precious, innocent babies in the womb. Beebe was endorsed by Carol Everett, speaker at the Texas Rally for Life, along with a slew of San Antonio, Texas and national pro-life leaders in his GOP Primary race against liberal Joe Straus. Straus has voted for third-trimester abortions, embryonic stem cell research, accepted $1,000 from Planned Parenthood and commendation by Planned Parenthood for his "tireless efforts." The annual Texas Rally for Life -- held on the Saturday after the anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision affirming a woman's right to an abortion - drew a diverse crowd from across the state.
Carrying signs and banners, they marched about 15 blocks to the south steps of the state Capitol.
There, Attorney General Greg Abbott U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, and former abortion provider Carol Everett spoke to the spirited group.

History is "His story." Sadly, most of us learned history through the prism of secular teachers and secular textbooks. As a result, we didn't learn the truth at all.
No matter what time period or what country you might study, it's essential to learn how God and God's people played a role. That's why I want to urge you to seriously consider taking your family on the Christian-based War for Independence History Tour in historic Charleston, South Carolina between Sunday, April 29 and Friday, May 4, 2012.
Mel Gibson portrayed Benjamin Martin, a South Carolinian veteran of the French and Indian War and a widower raising his seven children, who fought for American liberty.
I, Adam McManus, strongly urge that you take the time to investigate this amazing opportunity for you and your family to learn straight from the Christian historians who have researched the primary documents of the time.
Sign up this coming Tuesday, January 31st, and get a whopping 40% discount off the price of admission. Details below in action steps).

Bill Potter and Marshall Foster are top-shelf Christian historians who will give you a providential perspective on the lesser well known battles waged in the South for American liberty from England.
Tour the battlefield where thousands died to gain the freedoms that we enjoy today. See the sights and absorb the sounds.
Feast in the same hall that saw the unfolding of independence and entertained George Washington. Visit dank cellars where fervent patriots languished. Kayak to the isolated swampy island that was home to the "Swamp Fox" and his wily band.
These are experiences that you will share with your children's children in years to come.

Yeah, yeah. I know. Newt Gingrich had a lousy week and will probably lose the Florida primary on Tuesday. But for those tempted to once again predict the speedy collapse of his campaign, consider yourselves forewarned. I've known this guy long enough to realize that the only three species destined to survive a nuclear holocaust will be cockroaches, Cher and Newton Leroy Gingrich.
I first met Gingrich 17 years ago at a Destin, Fla., fundraiser held in my honor a few weeks after Newt declared that I was too conservative to win the general election. But after I won the primary against the moderate woman he anointed, there he was in Florida looking supremely bored and a little put out that he was having to sit through another politician's speech.

"We have witnessed something very disturbing this week. The Republican establishment which fought Ronald Reagan in the 1970s and which continues to fight the grassroots Tea Party movement today has adopted the tactics of the left in using the media and the politics of personal destruction to attack an opponent.
"We will look back on this week and realize that something changed. I have given numerous interviews wherein I espoused the benefits of thorough vetting during aggressive contested primary elections, but this week's tactics aren't what I meant. Those who claim allegiance to Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment should stop and think about where we are today. Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater, the fathers of the modern conservative movement, would be ashamed of us in this primary. Let me make clear that I have no problem with the routine rough and tumble of a heated campaign.
"As I said at the first Tea Party convention two years ago, I am in favor of contested primaries and healthy, pointed debate. They help focus candidates and the electorate. I have fought in tough and heated contested primaries myself. But what we have seen in Florida this week is beyond the pale. It was unprecedented in GOP primaries. I've seen it before - heck, I lived it before - but not in a GOP primary race."

As Ronald Reagan used to say: Well...
Yesterday we took note of former Reagan State Department official Elliott Abrams' piece over at NRO that went after Newt Gingrich on his relationship with Reagan. While voting regularly with Reagan as a young congressman from Georgia, Gingrich, claimed Abrams, "often spewed insulting rhetoric at Reagan, his top aides and his policies to defeat Communism." Abrams then goes on to cite " a famous floor statement Gingrich made on March 21, 1986."
Or sort of cites it.
In fact, I'm sorry to say, what appears to be going on here is that Elliott Abrams, a considerably admirable public servant and a very smart guy, has been swept up in the GOP Establishment's Romney frothings over the rise of Newt Gingrich in the Republican primaries. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join Thousands in San Antonio
for Christian Film Event of the Year Thursday, February 23 - Saturday, February 25 Gonzales Convention Center
One of the top highlights of my year is attending the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival with my bride Amy. The Film Festival will be held Thursday, February 23rd through Saturday, February 25th at the Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio, Texas. Plus, enjoy dozens of other exciting new Christian dramas, documentaries, comedies, and short films. The vision Henry Van Til correctly observed that "culture is religion externalized." By this, he meant that the culture of a people reflects their true religious priorities. The music, paintings, and film of a nation (not to mention the thousands of daily cultural expressions - how we live, eat, work, and entertain ourselves) express our priorities, our values, and our true faith.
Doug Phillips, the founder, articulates the vision. The Bible teaches that all men have faith, in that they either worship the creature or they worship the Creator, but no man is free from religious commitment. When a people worship sensuality or embrace dark visions of reality, it is always evidenced in the arts. There is no neutrality! On the other hand, when a nation fears and loves the God of Holy Scripture, their religious commitment is evidenced in the music they play, the way they dress, and their vision of family life.
The fact is that America is discontent with Hollywood's negative, monopolistic stranglehold on film and culture. The humanistic religious worldview of Hollywood elites created a rift in American culture and profoundly damaged the American family. We intend to respond, not by cursing the darkness, but by lighting candles. Building a community of independent Christian filmmakers is one such candle. Learn more detail about the San Antonio Christian Film Festival and Academy.

Men's Health and Women's Health magazines both ran recent articles about these must-eat daily foods, which are loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants (many also are listed in the popular book "Eat This, Not That," by David Zinczenko).
1. Carrots are the chief of all brightly colored veggies and fruits that are flowing with cancer- and inflammation-reducing carotenoids. You can eat them as raw baby carrots, shredded in salad or soup, on a baked sweet potato, in mango sorbet, etc. Men's Health recommends a daily half-cup of carrots. If carrots are absent, go for the tomatoes, broccoli or guacamole dip, which contains avocados, a good source of monounsaturated fat and potassium, which can lower blood pressure.
2. Tomatoes are loaded with the antioxidant lycopene, which decreases your risk of coronary artery disease and bladder, prostate, lung, stomach and skin cancers. Men's Health recommends 22 milligrams of lycopene daily, the equivalent of about eight red cherry tomatoes or a glass of tomato juice. If you enjoy V8, make sure it's low-sodium.

Now viral filmmaker Molotov Mitchell is tearing the lid off what he calls "one of the most scandalous cover-ups in U.S. history," the allegation that abortion provider Planned Parenthood has from its inception targeted black Americans for extinction.
Mitchell and the staff of Illuminati Pictures have created the explosive and controversial new film, "Gates of Hell," an effort born out the desire to reengage America in the debate over life and death.

Adbusters, the radical, Vancouver-based anti-consumerist magazine, credited by many media outlets for launching the Occupy Wall Street protests, has put out an ad calling for 50,000 protestors to "Occupy" the G8 summit in May. And they are not calling for peaceful protest.
The Adbusters ad shows a picture of policemen beating up a defenseless protestor, and comes with the caption: "In the Tradition of the Chicago 8." The Chicago 8 were radicals who incited riots in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic convention. The 1968 convention unrest became so legendary that the band Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young) wrote a song about it called "Chicago." The "tradition" of the Chicago 8 included calling for displays of public fornication and attacking police.

ATTENTION SAN ANTONIO AREA HUNTERS: CAN YOU VOLUNTEER ON A CHRISTIAN YOUTH HUNT?
Over the course of my 20-year career as a radio talk show host, I've met and interviewed a lot of fascinating people. Many of them are household names which you would recognize instantly.
Tom Snyder, the 46-year-old owner of the regional Colonial Life Insurance office here in Garden Ridge, has got to be one of the most intriguing people I've met in a long time. He's not famous. He's not a political leader. And he hasn't even written a book.
But he's spearheading a unique Christian ministry in our own backyard whose vision is as big as the Texas sky.
Tom Snyder, founder of Trinity Oaks, teaches a young boy on a Youth Hunt. If you would like to volunteer to be a guide, call 210.447.351. Now that he has become a successful businessman, Tom, a member of River City Community Church here in San Antonio, has a passion to give back to the community - especially to the children in demonstrable, life-changing ways.
That's why he founded Trinity Oaks, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. At the heart of the ministry are the youth hunts for 10 to 16-year-olds. Throughout their time, the young people experience firearms safety instruction, target shooting and actual big game hunting.
In the process, Tom wants to give the tweens and teens access to the great outdoors, to build their character, and to teach them the importance of responsibility in our narcissistic culture.

10 to 16-year-old boys, like the ones pictured above on a Trinity Oaks Youth Hunt develop self-confidence, an appreciation of God's creation and connect with the volunteer hunting guides.
"Our goal with youth is three-fold. First, we want to teach kids that hunting is not just about 'killing animals', but also about building relationships and enjoying God's majestic outdoors. Second, we want to promote our country's hunting heritage to future generations," said Tom Snyder.
"Third and most importantly, we want to show children of all ages that they have value and let them know there are people who care about them, people willing to listen to them and mentor them. We have found you can really reach a child and make a difference in his life just by sitting next to a campfire and listening to what he has to say."
During the 2010/2011 hunting season alone, Tom personally acted as the lead field guide for every one of the 20 youth hunts attended by 85 young people, 53 of whom were first-time hunters. Typically, each hunt is comprised of 3-5 youngsters along with their fathers and some volunteer guides. Each youth is assigned to an adult.
Their goal for the upcoming 2011/2012 hunting season is to have 30 youth hunts attended by 100 kids and 75 first-time children hunters.
Amazingly, Trinity Oaks covers every single expense including the cost of transportation, the lease of the land, the hunting license fees as well as the food, lodging and the mounting of the child's wildgame trophy.
All the meat is processed for free by volunteers, ground up and frozen into family packs. It's then distributed to needy families and homeless shelters throughout San Antonio as well as orphanages in Mexico.
ACTION STEPS FOR ADAM'S ARMY: 1. If you would like to suggest a boy or girl between the ages of 10 and 16 to participate in a future Trinity Oaks youth hunt, please call 210.447.0351, and tell them you are a McManus subscriber, or email.
2. If you would like to volunteer to become a guide or firearms trainer for some of the youth hunts, please call 210.447.0351 and tell them you are a McManus subscriber or e-mail.
3. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to Trinity Oaks to ensure that the Youth Hunts and Wounded Warrior Hunts continue, donate on-line here.
The cost of sending one underprivileged kid on a Christian Youth Hunt is $1,200. And now, thanks to the generosity of one sponsor, anything that you give up to $100,000 will be doubled.
So, if you give $150 today, your donation will be doubled to $300 and fund one-quarter of the $1,200 cost for one kid to participate in this life-changing ministry.
You can also make a tax-deductible donation by check made out to "Trinity Oaks." Send it to: Tom Snyder, Trinity Oaks, 9385 Miller Lane, San Antonio, Texas 78266. (Write "McManus newsletter" in the memo)
