REPUBLICAN DEBATE BRINGS OUT AGGRESSION IN CANDIDATES
The race for the Republican presidential nomination took a turn toward the South Carolina surreal Thursday as Rick Perry dropped out, Newt Gingrich faced stunning allegations from an ex-wife and Mitt Romney struggled to maintain a shaky front-runner's standing.
An aggressive evening debate capped the bewildering day.
Former Sen. Rick Santorum played aggressor for much of the night, trying to inject himself into what seemed increasingly like a two-way race with little more than a day remaining until the South Carolina polls open on Saturday. He accused Gingrich and Romney of "playing footsies with the left" when it came to health care. Both men rejected the allegations.

GINGRICH LACKS MORAL CHARACTER TO BE PRESIDENT, EX-WIFE SAYS
Newt Gingrich lacks the moral character to serve as President, his second ex-wife Marianne told ABC News, saying his campaign positions on the sanctity of marriage and the importance of family values do not square with what she saw during their 18 years of marriage.
In her first television interview since the 1999 divorce, to be broadcast tonight on Nightline, Marianne Gingrich, a self-described conservative Republican, said she is coming forward now so voters can know what she knows about Gingrich.

MARIANNE GINGRICH, NEWT'S EX-WIFE, SAYS HE WANTED 'OPEN MARRIAGE'
Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich in 1999 asked his second wife for an "open marriage" or a divorce at the same time he was giving speeches around the country on family and religious values, his former wife, Marianne, said Thursday.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Marianne Gingrich said her former husband called her on May 10, 1999, as she was having dinner with her 84-year-old mother and said, "I want a divorce."
"Is there anybody else?" Marianne Gingrich recalled saying. "He was quiet. Within two seconds, when he didn't immediately answer, I knew."
Two days later, Newt Gingrich gave a speech at a conference titled "The Demise of American Culture" sponsored by the Republican Women Leaders Forum in Erie, Pa. Gingrich extolled the virtues of the Founding Fathers and criticized liberal politicians for supporting tax increases, which he said hurt families and children. In the speech, which was televised on C-SPAN, he spoke often of God, families and values.

"When a liberal talks about values, will he or she actually like us to teach American history?" Gingrich told the women's group. "Will they actually like young people to learn that George Washington was an ethical man? A man of standards, a man who earned the right to be father of this country?"
Marianne Gingrich said she was surprised at the timing. "How could he ask me for a divorce on Monday and within 48 hours give a speech on family values and talk about how people treat people?" she said.

NEWT ALLY CALLS EX-WIFE UNSTABLE, UNHINGED
Allies of embattled GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich are coming to his defense against his ex-wife's new and salacious charges, labeling Marianne as "unstable" and "unhinged."
What's more is that they are slapping at ABC, which is set to run an interview Thursday with Marianne Gingrich in which she claims the former speaker wanted an open marriage so he could date his current wife, Callista. Gingrich's supporters claim the network is trying to get the Republican out of the race just as he's peaking in the polls.

GINGRICH SLAMS CNN FOR MARRIAGE QUESTION, GETS OVATION
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich drew at least two standing ovations just moments into the final South Carolina GOP presidential debate tonight when he criticized CNN moderator John King for opening with "trash," and accused the liberal media of attempting to protect President Barack Obama by attacking Republicans.

King began the two-hour debate from the North Charleston Coliseum with a question on accusations by Gingrich's ex-wife, Marianne, that the former speaker had asked her for permission to have an "open marriage" after she learned he was having an affair with his current wife, the former Callista Bisek.

WHY ARE WE ALLOWING LEFT-WING MEDIA TO MODERATE GOP DEBATES?
There is growing consternation in Republican circles and among conservatives over why Republicans keep allowing the various Communist, leftist and otherwise anti-American TV networks to host GOP debates.
The ickiness of Diana Sawyer asking questions in her cloying voice is more than most can bear. The utter cluelessness of the questions these people think actual American voters care about is mystifying. The shameless and ham-handed pandering to conservatives by the networks is revolting.

ABC NEWS: GINGRICH NOT CORRECT ABOUT SOURCES
Newt Gingrich's most potent slam against the media in last night's CNN debate alleged a certain cognitive dissonance. The speaker was on fire about an ABC report giving air to claims by ex-wife Marianne Gingrich that the former speaker had requested an "open marriage." He said:
"This story is false. Every personal friend I had in that period says the story was false. We offered several of them to ABC to prove it was false. They weren't interested because they would like to attack any Republican. They're attacking the governor, they're attacking me, I'm sure they'll get around to Senator Santorum, and Congressman Paul. I am tired of the elite media protecting Barack Obama by attacking Republicans."

ABC WORKED FOR MONTHS TO GET MARIANNE GINGRICH INTERVIEW
The television interview of Marianne Gingrich, a former wife of Newt Gingrich, that will be broadcast on Thursday night was initiated back in November, when ABC News was looking into an old federal investigation that involved the family.
The investigation was closed in 1997, but ABC's curiosity about it led the network to court Ms. Gingrich for an interview. Weeks of conversations ensued, and last week she agreed to go on camera on Jan. 13 in Washington.

DRUDGE SCREWED UP ABC'S PLANS FOR THE MARIANNE GINGRICH INTERVIEW
RUSH: All right, folks. I just saw the Marianne Gingrich video, and I think -- I'll be honest with you -- I think the Democrats may have to give Newt a second look here. Well, follow me on this. Newt Gingrich, aside from the budget deal in '95 and being made to ride in the back of Air Force One, Newt got along with Clinton pretty well, if you recall, and Newt treated Hillary with respect, even sat on the couch with Nancy Pelosi. Now, there's an accusation out there that Newt wanted an open marriage, just like Bill and Hillary. And, in fact, Newt even had the politeness to ask permission for it. Do you think Bill ever did that?

JENNY SANFORD: I WON'T VOTE FOR NEWT GINGRICH
Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's ex-wife Jenny Sanford said Thursday that Marianne Gingrich's claim her then-husband Newt asked for an open marriage calls "into question his character" and will have an impact on Saturday's primary.
Sanford, whose husband cheated on her, said that after hearing Marianne's bombshell, she won't vote for the ex-House speaker on Saturday and added that his infidelity will count politically in South Carolina even though voters were already aware of his marital issues.

CONSERVATIVES: FIGHT LIKE NEWT
I wish Republican politicians would have faith in the largely conservative electorate and not behave as though they'll make themselves unelectable unless they pander to Generic Moderate. Who is that guy, anyway? Have you ever met him?
Recently, we've seen a few examples of the liberal narrative's rearing its oppressive head and starkly different reactions to it. The first was Mitt Romney's reportedly telling the Wall Street Journal that as a wealthy person, he thinks he lacks the credibility to aggressively push tax cuts. Mitt is also looking timid about releasing his tax returns. He needs to fight back - consistently - instead of surrendering to the liberal narrative that success is evil. Mitt should take a lesson from Newt Gingrich on counterpunching against false liberal charges and innuendo.

Limbaugh did a victory dance on his radio show Friday after playing the sound bite on the air.
"It was read meat - people ate it up, standing 'O' after standing 'O' - two of them in one week," he said.

SANTORUM URGES CONSERVATIVES TO STAY WITH HIS RUN
Rick Santorum on Thursday pleaded with conservatives not to give up on his presidential hopes, urging them to resist calls to shift to rivals whom he mocked as "Tweedledum and Tweedledee" who were busy "playing footsies with the left."
Relishing his turn in the role of aggressor, Santorum tweaked his rivals during a day of campaigning and then in a toe-to-toe confrontation with them during the final debate before South Carolina polls on Saturday. The race seemed to turn to a two-man contest between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, and Santorum sought to derail both with scathing criticism.
