Over the course of my 20-year career as a radio talk show host, I've met and interviewed a lot of fascinating people.  Many of them are household names which you would recognize instantly. 


Tom Snyder, the 46-year-old owner of the regional Colonial Life Insurance office here in Garden Ridge, has got to be one of the most intriguing people I've met in a long time.  He's not famous.  He's not a political leader.  And he hasn't even written a book.
 
But he's spearheading a unique Christian ministry in our own backyard whose vision is as big as the Texas sky.



Now that he has become a successful businessman, Tom, a member of River City Community Church here in San Antonio, has a passion to give back to the community - especially to the children in demonstrable, life-changing ways.  


That's why he founded Trinity Oaks, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  At the heart of the ministry are the youth hunts for 10 to 16-year-olds.  Throughout their time, the young people experience firearms safety instruction, target shooting and actual big game hunting.

In the process, Tom wants to give the tweens and teens access to the great outdoors, to build their character, and to teach them the importance of responsibility in our narcissistic culture. 

"Our goal with youth is three-fold.  First, we want to teach kids that hunting is not just about 'killing animals', but also about building relationships and enjoying God's majestic outdoors.  Second, we want to promote our country's hunting heritage to future generations," said Tom Snyder.  
 
"Third and most importantly, we want to show children of all ages that they have value and let them know there are people who care about them, people willing to listen to them and mentor them.  We have found you can really reach a child and make a difference in his life just by sitting next to a campfire and listening to what he has to say."

During the 2010/2011 hunting season alone, Tom personally acted as the lead field guide for every one of the 20 youth hunts attended by 85 young people, 53 of whom were first-time hunters.  Typically, each hunt is comprised of 3-5 youngsters along with their fathers and some volunteer guides. Each youth is assigned to an adult. 

Their goal for the upcoming 2011/2012 hunting season is to have 30 youth hunts attended by 100 kids and 75 first-time children hunters.


Amazingly, Trinity Oaks covers every single expense including the cost of transportation, the lease of the land, the hunting license fees as well as the food, lodging and the mounting of the child's wildgame trophy.
 
All the meat is processed for free by volunteers, ground up and frozen into family packs.  It's then distributed to needy families and homeless shelters throughout San Antonio as well as orphanages in Mexico.

DUGGAR FAMILY SNAPS PICS OF MISCARRIED BABY

The stars of "19 Kids And Counting" sadly lost the child Michelle Duggar miscarried last Sunday, by uploading a heartbreaking picture on Twitter in her memory.


The photograph shows Michelle reaching out to touch daughter Jubilee's tiny hand, with the juxtaposition of size deeply moving.


While Michelle obviously displays a fully grown adult hand, Jubilee's is incredibly tiny, with her palm half the size of her mother's finger tip.


The deeply religious Duggar family held a memorial service yesterday, having announced the sad news last week on December 8.

Amy Duggar, a cousin who frequently appears on their hit TLC reality show tweeted the picture, saying: 'RIP precious Jubilee Shalom Duggar! Can't wait to meet you someday, thank you Lord for giving our family peace.'


At the ceremony, a selection of photos - which some might find distressing - were distributed to guests, with one image showing Jubilee's tiny feet on Michelle's hand, with the message: 'There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an imprint on this world.'

Michelle was five months pregnant when she learned the news during a check-up to find out the sex and the doctor failed to find a heartbeat.

Radar Online report that Jubilee weighed just 4oz and measured 6cm when she was stillborn on December 11.

Husband Jim expressed his sadness, but says the child is now in heaven.

He said: 'We won't see this child's life and the phases that we've seen for our other children, but we know we will see this child in heaven one day.

'We are thankful for each child, and we are blessed to have the children we have here and the ones we will meet someday in heaven.'

The couple escaped tragedy when 19th child Josie was born five months premature, however she celebrated her second birthday last Saturday.

The wife of West Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell pleaded guilty Tuesday to counts involving illegal late-term abortions on poor women at his Women's Medical Society clinic.


In a barely audible voice, Pearl Gosnell, 50, pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her in January: participating in an illegal late-term abortion, two counts of conspiracy, and being part of a corrupt organization.

JOHN EDWARDS DECIDED TO CELEBRATE CHRIST'S BIRTH  BY INVITING HIS MISTRESS WITH WHOM HE FATHERED A CHILD TO MOVE IN WITH HIM

With his imminent trial looming over him and Christmas just around the corner, disgraced senator John Edwards is said to be desperate to reconcile with his former mistress and has even asked her to move into his family home.


In recent months, Edwards is said to have been trying to repair his relationship with Rielle Hunter, who is also the mother of his love child Quinn only a year after his wife died.

Sources told the National Enquirer he asked the blonde divorcee to move into the North Carolina home he shared with his late wife Elizabeth, who he cheated on with the 47-year-old.


The source said: 'Rielle is considering the move. She wants what is best for their daughter Quinn and John's other children .

'If all of them living under one roof will help the kids, it's something Rielle will do.

He denies the charges and the trial is due to start in February, where he faces a maximum of 30 years in jail and a $1million fine if convicted.

Shortly after the indictment, the 58-year-old allegedly asked Rielle to marry him, but she refused, thinking it was just a way for him to protect himself.

But recently, the 47-year-old is said to have been touched by some of Edwards' gestures - including inviting Quinn to the wedding of his daughter Cate as well as hosting them at a gala Thanksgiving dinner.
The source told the Enquirer: 'John is trying his best to blend his two families. Rielle knows the trial will be tough and doesn't want the kids to suffer, so she's genuinely considering his offer to move into the house.

'Rielle will still do what her lawyers want her to do at trial because she doesn't want to break any law in any way.

'But she does realise that John is a broken man and needs someone at his side.'

She has always stuck by her father throughout everything, especially after her mother died from breast cancer last December.

Family friend Glenn Bergenfield said: 'Cate sticks with her dad. Despite all the things that have happened, she wants her father to succeed and her family to stay together.'

Regulators now have a more complete picture of money transfers in the final days of bankrupt brokerage MF Global, but must sort out which transactions were legitimate before more money can be released to customers, a top official told Reuters on Wednesday.

Jill Sommers, who is heading the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's review of MF Global, said regulators "are far enough along the trail" that they know where the money went.

MOTHER SUES COP AFTER 14-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER TASERED

The mother of a 14-year-old Dieruff High School student has filed a federal lawsuit claiming an Allentown police officer used excessive force when he shot her daughter in the groin with a stun gun during class dismissal in September.

Victoria Geist says her daughter, Keshana Wilson, had her arms raised high to indicate she surrendered when officer Jason Ammary pointed a Taser at her on Sept. 29 outside the high school and fired, according to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court by attorney Richard J. Orloski.

F.A.A. APPROVES IPADS IN COCKPITS, BUT NOT FOR PASSENGERS

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that pilots on American Airlines flights would be allowed to use iPads instead of paper flight manuals in the cockpit starting Friday, as reported by ZDNet, even during takeoff and landing. But passengers are still required to shut down anything with the slightest electronic pulse from the moment a plane leaves the gate until it reaches an altitude of 10,000 feet.

The rule barring passengers from using a Kindle, an iPad or even a calculator were originally made to protect the electronics of an aircraft from interference. Yet pilots with iPads will be enclosed in the cockpit just a few inches from critical aviation equipment.

BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS INFEST NAVY WARSHIP

A Navy shipbuilder in Maine says it had to fumigate a warehouse and part of a warship because a shipment of parts from the West Coast contained about two-dozen venomous black widow spiders.


Bath Iron Works employees discovered the arachnids in a crate containing vertical launch system components. Spokesman Jim DeMartini said Tuesday the discovery led to the fumigation of several compartments in the USS Michael Murphy, a destroyer that's under construction. A warehouse in Brunswick also was fumigated.

SAUDI WOMAN BEHEADED FOR 'WITCHCRAFT AND SORCERY'

A woman was beheaded in Saudi Arabia for practicing witchcraft and sorcery, the kingdom's Interior Ministry said, prompting Amnesty International to call for a halt in executions there.

Amina bint Abdel Halim Nassar was executed Monday for having "committed the practice of witchcraft and sorcery," according to an Interior Ministry statement. Nassar was investigated before her arrest and was "convicted of what she was accused of based on the law," the statement said. Her beheading took place in the Qariyat province of the region of Al-Jawf, the ministry said.

Israel had closed Temple Mount gate due to 'safety concerns'

JERUSALEM - Following protests from nationalist politicians and Temple Mount groups here, Israel today re-opened a walkway to Judaism's holiest site, two days after its closure on purported safety grounds.

It was not immediately clear whether the Mughrabi Gate, the only Mount entrance for non-Muslims, was back open indefinitely.
