University of Nevada-Reno Launches
USHLI Program
Nevada-Reno
Students at the University of Nevada-Reno, under the leadership of Dr. Emma Sepulveda, recently launched USHLI's Collegiate Leadership Development Program. The program, sponsored by the Latino Research Center and certified by the University for one hour of academic credit, focuses on how public policy is formulated, implemented, and influenced.

Among the 20+ university officials committed to participating in the program are the President, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Student Services, the Director of the Latino Research Center, and the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, to name a few.

USHLI was contracted by the University to offer the seven-week program, which is being conducted by Dr. Juan Andrade, USHLI president. The basic elements of the program include administration, academics, student affairs, and financial literacy.

Student organizations interested in hosting USHLI's Collegiate Leadership Development Program on their campus are urged to contact Isabel Reyes or Ricardo Lopez. Both can be reached at 312-427-8683 or [email protected] and [email protected], respectively.
A Cycle Ends with 15,000 New Registrations; Another Cycle Begins
Staff and InternUSHLI Field Coordinators Isabel Reyes and Ricardo Lopez and Jackie Sierra, an intern attending Farragut High School, loaded up thousands of new voter registrations and delivered them to the Chicago Board of Elections and the County Clerk's office.

Almost all of the new registrations were newly naturalized citizens residing in Cook County. College student interns registered over 15,000 new voters in the cycle that ended August 7.

USHLI interns are expecting to register 10,000 new voters, mostly newly naturalized citizens, before the end of the year. Interested sponsors are urged to contact Dr. Juan Andrade at 312-427-8683 or via email at [email protected].
Midwest Student Leadership Conference Features Nationally Prominent Speakers
USHLI has lined up some of the best public speakers in the nation to address its 2009 series of regional student leadership conferences. The conferences will be held in Chicago, Spokane, Newark, Kansas City, and Orlando.

Addressing the Midwest Student Leadership Conference at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place on September 25-26 will be Ernesto Mejia, Roy Juarez, and Dr. Angelina Pedroso.

The series of conferences will feature a College Recruitment Fair on Friday for 500 high school students and recruiters representing colleges located within a 100-mile radius of the host city. The purpose for the College Recruitment Fair is to encourage students to stay in school, prepare for some kind of post-secondary training or education, and graduate.

On Saturday, approximately 200 emerging leaders representing student organizations on 25-30 college campuses in each region are expected to attend. Students will receive advanced leadership skills development training, information on graduate school, exposure to career opportunities, and useful information on how to get involved in the 2010 Census. College scholarships will be awarded through a grant from Verizon.

Recruiters and students are urged to contact Isabel Reyes or Ricardo Lopez for more information on our regional conferences. Both can be reached at 312-427-8683 or [email protected] and [email protected], respectively. The dates and locations for all five conferences are listed in the column to the left.

USHLI is seeking sponsors for the 2009 series, which currently include Verizon, Walt Disney World, AARP and Southwest Airlines. Potential sponsors needing additional information are urged to contact Tammy Deavours at 312-371-8683 or [email protected].
Volunteers Needed for Regional Conferences
VolunteersWe are looking for volunteers for all USHLI Regional Student Leadership Conferences. The conferences will be held in Chicago IL, Spokane WA, Newark NJ, Kansas City MO, and Orlando FL. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the USHLI office at 312-427-8683 for complete details.
