State Profiles: Latest Demographic Information on Latinos
USHLI is preparing to release state-level demographic profiles of Latinos in all 50 states based on the latest data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. The demographic profiles consist of 21 tables with data pertaining to, but not limited to, population, age, gender, education, housing, employment, citizenship, language preference, and business.

Work on the state profiles was completed by Josue Pernillo who interned with USHLI while a student at the Illinois Math and Science Academy and again as a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His 2009 internship at USHLI was sponsored by HACU, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, through a grant from the Ford Pass program.

Access to the 50 state profiles will be available soon on the USHLI website, whose reconstruction is nearly complete.
Coming Soon: USHLI Midwest Student Leadership Conference
USHLI is preparing to launch its 2009 series of Regional Student Leadership Conferences. The first in the series will be the Midwest Student Leadership Conference, which will be held September 25-26 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, located at 2233 South Martin Luther King Drive in Chicago.

The conference will feature a Post-Secondary Recruitment Fair for 500 high school students on Friday. Recruiters representing post-secondary institutions within a 200-mile radius of Chicago are being invited to attend. The purpose for the Recruitment Fair is to encourage students to stay in school and graduate, and to make them aware of what they need to be doing to prepare for some kind of post-secondary training or education.

On Saturday, approximately 200 emerging leaders representing student organizations on 25 college campuses in six states are expected to attend. Students will receive advanced leadership skills development training, information on graduate school, exposure to career opportunities, and useful information on how to get involved in the 2010 Census. College scholarships will be awarded through a grant from Verizon.

Recruiters and students are urged to contact Isabel Reyes or Ricardo Lopez for more information on our five regional conferences. Both can be reached at 312-427-8683 or ireyes@ushli.org and rlopez@ushli.org, respectively. The dates and locations for all student conferences are listed in the column to the left.

USHLI is seeking sponsors for the 2009 series, which currently include Verizon, Walt Disney World Co., AARP and Southwest Airlines. Persons needing sponsorship information are urged to contact Tammy Deavours at 312-371-8683 or tdeavours@ushli.org.
