NEA and AARP Co-Chair USHLI Annual Dinner |
The National Education Association and AARP served as Co-Chairs of USHLI's very successful Annual Dinner, which attracted 24 sponsors and contributors. Our keynote speaker was Congressman Luis Gutierrez who is arguably one of the most articulate and passionate speakers in America today. Honorees included Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez, the first woman to be elected prosecutor in Cook County; the Rev. Jesse Jackson, on the 25th anniversary of his historic campaign for President of the United States; and Karina Jimenez, our Outstanding Intern Award for registering 783 new voters.
USHLI thanks our Dinner Chair, the Honorable Nelson Diaz, our generous Co-Chairs, and all of our sponsors and contributors. USHLI also congratulates our honorees and thanks Congressman Luis Gutierrez and everyone who attended for making this a very successful event. |
State Commissions Meet at USHLI |
 |
USHLI again convened the semi-annual meeting of state commissions on Hispanic affairs. The group, which now calls itself the United States Council on Hispanic Affairs, meets twice annually in Chicago - during USHLI's national conference and in conjunction with our Annual Dinner. USHLI is now in its 4th year of providing technical assistance and support to the group.
The state commissions provide another layer of leadership in the Latino community which all too often goes overlooked. State commissions are created by legislative mandate to provide advice and counsel to their respective governors, legislators and state agencies on issues that affect the Latino community. In recent years these commissions have been on the front lines fighting against anti-immigrant and anti-Latino legislation proposed in state legislatures throughout the United States. With the help of Southwest Airlines, USHLI has been able to bring these superb leaders together to exchange ideas, discuss strategy, and plan for action.
The group has now been joined by state advisory councils that have been created by executive order of the Governor to serve a very similar purpose. USHLI recently partnered with NEA and AFT to convene a Latino Summit on Education, which was attended by state commissions and advisory councils representing 23 states. USHLI salutes these leaders who are doing very good and important work on behalf of the Latino community.

MillerCoors Scholars Register 15,269 New Voters |
 |
USHLI's 21st Century Leaders Summer Internship Program was sponsored by MillerCoors. MillerCoors Scholars were involved in conducting research to update the upcoming 2010 issue of The Almanac of Latino Politics, attended public policy seminars conducted by city and county officials and state legislators, and registered 15,269 new voters, mostly newly naturalized citizens. Students earned $2,500 toward their college expenses during the 10-week program.
USHLI commends this outstanding group of interns for their excellent work and for preparing themselves for leadership. And USHLI thanks MillerCoors for their generous support and commitment to Latino youth.
