Democrats
There are five major segments that comprise the U.S. electorate - Whites, Women, Labor, African Americans, and Latinos. In the three times Democrats have won since 1972, they have carried the Women, Labor, Latino, and African American vote, and run well among Whites. Democrats are most successful when they receive over 80% of the African American vote, over 70% of the Latino vote, 59% of the Labor vote, 50% or more of the Women vote, and over 43% of the White vote.

Republicans
In the six times Republicans have won since 1972, they have carried the White vote, carried or nearly carried the Women vote, significantly split the Labor vote, significantly split the Latino vote, and avoided losing all of the African American vote.  Republicans have been most successful when they receive 54%-67% of the White vote, 43%-61% of the Women vote, 37%-50% of the Labor vote, 30%-39% of the Latino vote, and 8%-18% of the African American vote.
