USHLI Supports Funding to Study Creation of Latino National Museum
Latino National MuseumUSHLI, a member of the National Museum of the American Latino Advisory Board Committee, applauds the final passage of the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of the National Museum of the American Latino Act, S. 500, and calls on the Senate leadership to fully fund the Commission. The bill was included in the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 (S. 2739), which passed the Senate on April 10, 2008 and the House of Representatives on April 29, and was signed into law by President Bush on May 8, 2008.

The Commission would help determine how to properly recognize the contributions Hispanic Americans have made to our nation's history by studying the potential creation of a national museum dedicated to the art, culture, and the story of Hispanic Americans.

USHLI calls on the Senate leadership to fully fund the Commission at $2.1 million in Fiscal Year 2009. It's extremely important that the Commission be fully funded in order for it to undertake its critical role and be allowed to carry out its functions. For full story click here.

Census News
A group of 11 national Latino organizations, including USHLI, and a network of 10 state commissions organized by USHLI, have united to form the Latino Census Network (LCN). The LCN has met twice with Directors of the Census Bureau to discuss issues/concerns related to the 2010 Census; first with the outgoing Census Director, Louis Kincannon, at the 2007 USHLI national conference, and second with the incoming Census Director, Steven Murdoch, at the 2008 USHLI national conference.

Our weekly update, USHLI: Making a Difference, begins a new series of Census-related articles written for or forwarded to the LCN by Angelo Falcon, President of the National Institute for Latino Policy and founder of the LCN.  He was recently appointed to the Hispanic Advisory Council by the Secretary of Commerce. The following, the first in the series, was written by Angelo Falcon:

The challenges facing an accurate Latino count by the 2010 Census in light of the negative environment created by anti-immigrant and anti-Latino sentiment in this country and other factors will be enormous. It is, therefore, critical that Census Bureau staff doing the outreach have adequate numbers of Latinos in their ranks at all levels. Unfortunately, the Census Bureau has done a poor job of recruiting and hiring Latinos over the years and currently has one of the worst records of Latino hiring in the federal government. To remedy this problem, a major joint effort by the Census Bureau and our community will be required. For full article click here.
