Partnership Benefits Approved by Council
Monday night, the Mayor and Council approved an ordinance modifying the administrative policies of the Village to allow employees to register domestic partnerships for equal access to benefits, such as bereavement leave, family medical leave act, and health/dental plans. With this move, Palmetto Bay becomes only the fifth city in Miami-Dade County to offer this benefit. Sponsored by Mayor Eugene Flinn and unanimously approved by the entire Village Council, the ordinance extends to all domestic partner relationships. "I do not think that it's appropriate that we have an insurance plan that leaves some of our people out," said Mayor Flinn, "This is a commonly provided benefit in many corporations." Councilwoman Shelley Stanczyk, co-sponsor of the Ordinance, agreed, stating, "This is really about what's right and what's equitable... It's time that all of us were treated fairly and equally, and our employees deserve that, as well." Other actions at the meeting included:
- Funding of $250,000 in resurfacing and repaving work on Village streets;
- Use of a County grant totaling $319,500 for improvements at both Thalatta and Coral Reef Parks;
- Approval of sidewalk improvements; and
- Approval of various Park projects including installation of lightning prediction systems; purchase and installation of live oak trees at Palmetto Bay Park; installation of WiFi at Palmetto Bay Park and Coral Reef Park; and, selection of a vendor to manage the new concession facility at Coral Reef Park.

 Safe, Successful Special Events Start with a Village-Issued Permit
With the warmer spring weather, more and more businesses will be hosting special events to promote products, attract clientele, and increase sales. In most instances, these events draw larger than usual groups of people, and; therefore, can pose safety concerns for neighboring businesses and neighborhoods. To ensure a safe, pleasant, and Village-approved event, please contact Village Hall as the first step in your event-planning process.
