GOODFINDER |
In issue 179 I introduced the "Goodfinder", a slogan that resulted from a fascinating survey that found the three common traits for happiness. The first trait is to "look for the good in yourself", and the second trait (issue 181) is "to look for the good in others".

GOODFINDER PART TROIS |
The third trait of a Goodfinder is to find the good in all situations in life. The coaching tool I employ is called reframing a problem into an opportunity. We can be trained to reframe problems into opportunities.

EXAMPLES OF REFRAMING |
JAMES WHISTLER'S dream was to be a career soldier. When he flunked out of West Point, he considered himself a failure and became very depressed. He used painting as a therapeutic opportunity to heal himself. He not only became well but became famous for his paintings.

JULIO IGLESIAS |
Julio was enjoying a successful career as a soccer player until he became injured and temporarily paralyzed. A nurse gave him a guitar to help him divert his attention from his paralysis. Julio turned his problem into an opportunity that changed his life and brought success to him and enjoyment to millions. |

EXERCISE |
This week I invite you to do the following:
1. Talk to a confidant about a recent disappointment or problem in your life.
2. Frame your discussion in the context of a potential opportunity or a potential advantage.
3. Discuss what you learned from the experience and the benefits you gained.
Some of you may want to share this exercise with me, and I welcome hearing from all of you and learning with you.
