| Should Employees Be Allowed to Use Their Own Devices for Work? | |

By Curt LeCaptain, Network Engineer
What business doesn't want more productive employees? Many employees today are starting to push to be able to bring their own devices to be used to make their IT lives easier. Telecommuting employees may already use home computers to remotely access your systems. But what about connecting with portable devices such as tablets and smart phones? What about employees owning their own laptops and connecting to your network? Directly connecting devices to your network can significantly increase the possibility of security breaches, viruses, maintenance, support, and many other issues. Is the risk worth it?
At Infinity, we currently allow personal cell phones to be used for business and pay employees a stipend instead of paying for cellular service. We have a security policy in place and an acknowledgement form that employees sign agreeing that should it become necessary, Infinity reserves the right to wipe out the contents of the smart phone, by one of our internal IT staff or remotely via management software. Situations like this are becoming more and more common in today's workplace. As you move into the new year, bring your own device may be something your company may want to consider and we invite you to read some recent articles about this topic below.

By John Parkison Wall Street Journal, Nov. 15, 2011
Fight it all you want, but employees are going to be bringing their own smartphones, tablets and other technology to work with them. So it's time to stop resisting and start preparing.
Most of the organizations I worked with or for over the past 40 years had strict rules about technology. They kept tight control over what hardware and software workers could use, believing it would be easier to secure and manage that way. Some even went so far as to lock down their technologies, meaning employees couldn't do things like change user preferences.
Such an approach seemed to make sense, considering the challenges related to fighting viruses and malware, as well as the need to secure business data and make sure company computers weren't used in appropriately.

Simple Tips for Getting Your Network Ready for Employee-Owned Devices
By: the Processor.com 12/02/11 Vol. 33 #24 edition. Where developing a strategy for employees to bring their own mobile devices into the workplace is concerned, arguably no word holds as much meaning as "impact." After all, IT departments facing down an invasion of mobile devices coming from outside the company must deal with the impact those devices will have on network resources, security, budgets, workloads, support responsibilities, and even on how employees view IT.

| Can't Find Your Cell or Keys? You Might Need the PhoneTag Gadget! | |
An avid cell phone user to stay connected, I carry my cell around the house and as such tend to set it down, only to forget where. Losing the cell phone often increases in a cell phone only household especially when you add kids to the list of users.
Some fun facts:
- 41% of people in the millennial generation (born 1976-2001) don't have a landline telephone.
- A recent study found the number one most forgotten thing by adults is where they put their keys.
Attach a Cobra Tag™ sensor to your keys, purse, computer bag, or any other item you want to protect from loss or misplacement. The tag's sensor sends a message to your cell phone via a free app and will remind you if you leave your phone or valuables behind. Is the problem you can't find your cell phone? Problem solved. Push a button on the tag and it will ring your Smartphone. In addition, you can use an app to lock your phone if it becomes out of range with your tagged item.

Grow Your Business with Video Blogs | |
You've got a great marketing tool - your website! How can you use it to better promote your business? A marketing tip that could help your business grow is to try video blogs. The trick to whether this will work for your business largely depends on whether or not you can actually produce relevant and interesting content.
You may be thinking you would need a professional video, but blogs got their start by being an outlet of real people views and thoughts. And, you do not have to spend a fortune to create video blogs that will work for your company. You're an expert - rough, genuine, flip video shoots can be just as powerful if you are providing valuable content. A way to get started might be to post a tip, teaching an idea through demonstration. Or, post on topics related to your business that are either controversial or educational and get people to comment. The benefit to you is this not only helps lift SEO, but the engagement by your visitors acts like an ongoing campaign.
How do you get started? Search for useful tips you can provide. Shoot a short video of you teaching the idea or explaining the tip. You could even add a downloadable document below the video with more in-depth information or instruction. Load your video on YouTube and use keywords in your title. Then, post the video on your blog with a compelling headline and distribute the link to all your clients and prospects using e-mail and social media sites. Encourage a person to respond and comment and if you want a lot of comments and traffic, talk about something that encourages feedback such as a topic related to your business that hits an emotional nerve or is a bit controversial.
Another idea might be to create a video tip and then send a postcard to direct people on where and how to view the lesson and how to subscribe to additional tips online. Send them out with your account executives to client sites and make them available at your front desk or hand them out if you have store traffic. Providing tips is just one idea for promoting your business. Consider something your business or a member of your business may find fun and interesting to video blog about.
