| Thailand Flooding Affects Computer Availability | |
By Suzi Sevcik, Inside Technical Sales Specialist
The flooding in Thailand had a significant impact on the production of hard drive and other electronic components used by computer manufacturers. This includes HP, one of our leading suppliers.
As your trusted HP Partner, we wanted to ensure you we will do our best to source HP business units from various channels to continue to meet the needs of your business. However, due to the shortage, we are temporarily unable to guarantee price quotes or availability and are forced to verify pricing and stock status at the point of sale.
We primarily see volatility in price and the stock-on-hand of business-class laptops & desktops. What we've experienced in the past couple of weeks were spikes in price & lack of availability of HP's more popular models - the 4300 series laptops & the 6000 series desktop. HP has also suspended production of many popular models in these series. As such, we ask that you please be patient with us if there are availability issues in fulfilling your orders.
This shortage is not limited to HP. Other PC manufacturers such as Dell & Lenovo are facing the same issues.
We have heard different timelines for when the hard drive shortage will be over, but have not received an exact date. I would plan for at least seeing business PC/laptop shortages until early 2012.
Special note: HP continues to be a leader in the computing industry, recently receiving CRN's Annual Report Card awards. Based on a survey of more than 3500 solution providers, HP was awarded top honors in the categories of Notebooks/Mobile Computers and Volume Servers. |

| Top 5 Network Security Mistakes | |
1. Weak Passwords. Everyone knows you need to have a strong password, yet "password" is still the #1 password used by computer users. For maximum security, your password should contain numbers and letters, both upper and lowercase combined. It is also recommended passwords be changed on a regular basis.
2. Lack of Education. Most viruses and spyware are invited by the user. If you want to prevent employees from downloading viruses, educate them on what new viruses are circulatingand about common scams, so they don't inadvertently let hackers info your network.
3. Lack of Maintenance. No software is perfect, which means security loopholes will be exploited by hackers the minute they are discovered. That's why it's critical to keep your security patches up to date.
4. Plug & Surf. Computers are not designed "ready to go" out of the box. Before a phone line, ethernet cable or wireless card is anywhere near a new computer, security needs to be configured. This should include virus protection and a firewall at the very minimum.
5. Do It Yourself. Setting up a network, applying proper security measures and downloading and installing software can be tricky. Large companies have IT departments. Small business owners should also ask for advice or even hire help. It's worth the extra cost. |
