The Thoreau Society's 70th Annual Gathering
Henry David Thoreau's Environmental Ethos: Then and Now, with special exhibits and events around Concord (July 7 to 10).
- Into The Woods: Landscape, Art and Thoreau: Barbara Novak in conversation with Nick Miller at the Concord Art Association at 5 pm on Sunday, July 10. Limited seating, reservations required (gallery@concord.org or 978-369-2578).
- Grammy Award-winning pianist Jacqueline Schwab and singer/folklorist Dillon Bustin will bring history to life through music on July 8 at 7:30 pm at First Parish on Lexington Road in Concord. Back to the Land at the Old Manse in Concord: Alec Ellsworth, a partner in Growing for Good and also the gardener for Gaining Ground's garden at the Old Manse, will take visitors on a personalized tour of the plants grown by Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne in the garden originally planted for them by Henry David Thoreau. The experiential talk, including a tour of Hawthorne's garden and tea, will take place at 2 pm Sunday afternoon, July 17; additional programs will occur on the afternoon of August 20 and on the evening of August 25. SUMMERTIME OPEN STUDIOS
- Art Grows Here, July 15 to 24: Art Grows Here (AGH) will celebrate its second annual tour of outdoor art installation. Follow the AGH map by foot, by bike or by car to find art in Hamilton and Wenham. Last year, art sprouted from suburbia, toys exploded from windows and a ten-foot dandelion magically appeared on one front lawn and released its seeds to the wind. This year's tour promises to put even more art on the map so be sure to make time to head North. http://artgrowshere.com/
- Art Drive, July 16-17 and August 20-21: The 8th annual South Coast Artists' Open Studio tour visits the studios of some of the best artists living, working and exhibiting in the four beautiful coastal towns of Tiverton and Little Compton, Rhode Island; and Westport and Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

The Peabody Essex Museum
- Man Ray | Lee Miller: Partners in Surrealism: Through December 4. Combining rare vintage photographs, paintings, sculpture and drawings, this exhibition tells the story of the artists' brief but intense association and reveals the nature of their creative partnership. Summer evening party in the Asian Garden from 5:30 until 8 pm on July 21. Admission, but no reservations required; pay at the door. Enjoy interactive human chess and other Surrealist games, do-it-yourself art, live music by Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys, cocktails and a demo by the chef from The Blue Ox in Lynn.
- Ripple Effect, The Art of H20: through April 30, 2012. The exhibit highlights water as a medium for artistic expression and hands-on exploration. Summer evening party in the Art and Nature Center from 5:30 until 8 pm on August 25. Admission, but no reservations required; pay at the door. Experiment with water in interactive sculpture, decorated papers and Chinese calligraphy among other unexpected uses. Featured works include Andrew Sempere's Bowl of Oceans sculpture and Susan Fishman and Elena Kalman's The Wave, an interactive installation in the Asian Garden.

- Check the amazing reflections and constructions in the Dale Chihuly exhibit, Through the Looking Glass, during regular museum hours through August 7.

- Admission to the museum and the sculpture park will be FREE from 10 am to 5 pm on Tuesday through Friday between July 5 and September 2, and there will be extended evening hours on Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm.
- Free concerts will take place on several Thursday evenings: Nick Deysher on July 14; The Farewells on July 21; and the Ukulele Show on July 28.
- Current exhibits include Ursula von Rydingsvard: Sculpture , Andy Goldsworthy: Snow and Wall Works
- Stil Studio will offer summer sessions of fitness and relaxation for the entire family in the Sculpture Park. Yoga in the Park will be offered on July 10 and August 14. Fees apply for non-members. Click to learn more.

Emerson Umbrella
- In the Gallery: Ceramic Sculpture and Tablewares, new works by Caitlyn Marsh and Stephanie Santos. Open from July 7 through August 8, with an Artists' Reception on July 28 from 6 to 8 pm.
- An artist's talk featuring the sculptors whose work is on display on the Umbrella grounds will take place on Thursday evening July 21 from 7 to 9 pm. Four sculptors (Anne Alexander, Hilary Hutchison, John Weidman, and Joseph Wheelwright) will discuss their work, their techniques and their philosophies, illustrated with images from their body of artwork.

Lexington Arts and Crafts Society
- The 7th annual Artisans' Marketplace and Summer Tent Sale will take place on July 23 (rain or shine), from 10 am until 4 pm. The sale will be closed on July 24 and resume on July 25, continuing until August 20. Hours: 10 am to 4 pm, Monday - Saturday and noon to 4 pm on Sunday.

HOT ROAD TRIP!
Waterfire: A series of 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of Providence turns "downcity" into a festival of art, sound, light, food and fun.
