the Word from the Herd
What is vibrissae?
Bet you've never heard of the vibrissae! You might think they are just plain old whiskers. The vibrissae are hair like sensors that grow around our muzzle and eyes. There are lots and lots of nerve fibers connected to them which make them very sensitive to whatever they touch. They act as feelers to help us protect our vital areas of the eyes, lips, and ears. Sometimes when you think we are sniffing or smelling something we are actually using the vibrissae to explore our environment. As you know we don't have hands but our vibrissae work in much the same way allowing us to investigate and assess objects. They also help us with depth perception as we can't see directly at the end of our nose. So be kind to our whiskers as they are working hard to keep us safe!

Did you know?
See The Rider's Position for the 3rd of the four fundamentals of the rider's position. The four fundamentals allow the horse to move with a connected, ground-covering, athletic stride. The length of the stirrup is essential to the four fundamentals because a correctly placed stirrup enables the rider to have correct angles, spring, and weight distribution.
|
Quote of the Month
Riding is a partnership. The horse lends you his strength, speed and grace, which are greater then yours. For your part, you give him guidance, intelligence and understanding which are greater then his. Together you can achieve a richness that neither can alone. ~Lucy Rees |
The Rider's Position Series
#3 of the Four Fundamentals of a Good Working Position
Security of the Rider in the Saddle: Be united with the movement of the horse
Riding without fear of falling is the best way to have the most fun with your horse! True security in the saddle means finding a way to stay on while not holding on with your hands or legs and still move in unison with your horse. The key to being secure in the saddle is to use balance, weight distribution (distributing your weight evenly into the stirrups), spring (spring in your legs) and grip (proper use of grip in your knees, upper calves and lower thighs). |

Dear Friends of MacNair's,
As you know our dear sister Caroline passed away on July 24, 2012. As a sister, friend, equestrienne, businesswoman and conservationist she made her mark on us all. We know you share our sense of loss and sadness.
Caroline worked for many years on what started as a small family business and later grew under her energy, vision and effort to be the MacNair's County Acres you know today. She loved the farm and the riding program and wants it to continue. We want you to know that that is our wish as well. We will all work to carry forward her love and vision.
Thank you for being an important part of Country Acres. It is and with your continued support will continue to be a special place.
With thanks,
Colin MacNair
Joan MacNair Petty
Henry MacNair
Alan MacNair

Caroline Irwin MacNair Carl
November 21, 1953 - July 24, 2012
Caroline MacNair Carl passed away peacefully at her home on July 24, 2012, surrounded by her loving family and friends. As a lifelong resident of Wake County, Caroline will long be remembered for her love of horses and her love of the land. Her dedication to her family, her friends and her community was evident in her daily life. Caroline had a "spunk" and a bright smile that will be remembered by so many.
Caroline earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg in 1976 where she founded the school's handicapped riding program. She was the owner of MacNair's Country Acres that began as a family business in 1965, and under her leadership, became one of North Carolina's leading equestrian facilities. Throughout her riding career Caroline Carl distinguished herself nationally by earning US Dressage Federation Bronze, Silver and Gold medals, and in 1996 was inducted into the St. Andrews Hall of Fame for her contributions to the college's equine program. Caroline's legacy is that students and second generations who started riding at MacNair's are now sending their children and grandchildren.
Caroline's interest was focused on improving the lives of children and protecting land in perpetuity. She was Co-Chairman with her sisters of 'Jump for the Children' Horse Show benefiting Duke Children's Hospital. She also sponsored farm outings for pediatric patients from regional hospitals. In 2007, her professional accomplishments were recognized with a Triangle Business Journal "Women in Business Award," prompting Caroline to quip that she was the only farmer to be so honored. She was awarded a Sir Walter Raleigh Community Appearance Award for natural resource stewardship, the environmental Urban Stewardship Award, and the Interfaith Food Shuttle for partnering with that organization's Teaching Farm Project. Caroline's passion for natural resource conservation was significantly demonstrated by her donation of land to the Triangle Land Conservancy and the establishment of an agricultural easement with Wake County Soil & Water, protecting the land for years to come.
Caroline was preceded in death by her husband, William Foster "Bill" Carl, her parents, Colin and Joan McIntyre MacNair, and her sister, Catherine MacNair Midyette. She is survived by Catherine's husband Carlton, a sister Joan MacNair Petty and her husband Glenn, brothers Colin MacNair and his wife Bridget, Henry Knox MacNair and John Alan MacNair. Caroline's love of her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends was an important part of her life. The family would like to extend grateful thanks to Caroline's caregivers, Alga and Beatriz, and to Hospice of Wake County, for their loving care.
For those who wish to honor Caroline's life, kindly consider memorial donations to Duke Children's Hospital or Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, www.pancan.org/.
A celebration of Caroline Irwin MacNair Carl's life and enduring legacy was held at her home on the lawn at MacNair's Country Acres, on Tuesday, July 31st at 11:00am.
