the Word from the Herd Tacking Up

Putting my girth on seems so simple. But (no surprise here) there is a best way to do it & then a bunch of other ways. First, make sure there is no dirt, mud or shavings under my belly. You can guess why it's not a good idea to put your head under there to have a look. Instead, use your hand & feel whether the girth area is clean.
Second, if my girth has elastic on both ends or neither end, it doesn't have a left or right. If there is only elastic on one side, that goes on my left. Attach my girth on the left side first, on the bottom holes; use the outside billets unless it says otherwise on my stall door. Then go around to my right side and reach under me for the girth. Don't forget to slip it through the martingale loop (if I have one.) Lift the girth up to the billets & then check where the martingale loop is - it should be right in the middle of my front legs. If it's over to one side it will rub my elbows when I move. But please don't slide it around after the girth is attached! That pinches! Third, attach the girth on the right side just so it's snug, not tight. This is a good time to put your helmet on, if you're not already wearing it. When you tighten the girth from now on, just go up one hole at a time - up one hole on the left billet, up one hole on the right, etc. Now, while my girth is still not all-the-way tight, is a good time to check your stirrup length. Then see if the girth needs to go up another hole. Same procedure; only one hole at a time, even if you go back & forth from left to right more than once. Lastly, when we get to the ring, before pulling your stirrups down, check the girth again by trying to go up another hole - not by slipping your fingers under it & yanking. That pinches! If it's really hard to make it go up another hole, it's tight enough. Also, please make sure the saddle pad hasn't wrinkled! A wrinkle under the girth is like walking with a pebble in your shoe. Ow. By tightening my girth gradually instead of suddenly, you are helping keep me much more comfortable. You wouldn't want me to be grouchy about my girth, would you? Thanks!

Dear Friends of MacNair's,
June sees the end of the academic year of lessons at the Riding School & the beginning of Camp Cheval & summer lessons. Summer days on the farm in the company of horses are really quite special. MacNair's welcomes Cam Womble to our staff. Cam, we are so excited to have you on our team! The MacNair's 4-H Club had 17 of its riders qualify for the State competition, which will be here in Raleigh at the Hunt Center, 7/6-10. Way to go! We saw how much hard work went into your success & are proud of the effort you made. N.C. State IHSA rider Kristi Styslinger ended up ninth in the nation in Intermediate Over Fences. Good work, Kristi! That's a great accomplishment. On 6/5 we have a NCHJA "C" Show that will run in both rings. MacNair's Country Acres & Summit Hill Farm have partnered to bring you the Triangle Jumper Series: six jumper shows (three at each facility). The first one at MCA will be 6/25. Should be fun! The day starts with jumps at 2' - 2'3" & goes to at least 3'6". The day after that is a NCDCTA Show. Hope to see you at any or all! Nancy

A Couple Reminders... for June
Camp Cheval: Camp begins this month. The improvement that comes from riding (and being around horses) five days in a row is amazing. And some of the friendships formed at camp last way past the end of camp.
Camp information
Camp registration
Summer lessons: Don't lose the skills you have worked so hard to attain! Summer Community Lesson Info Summer Pony School Info | nice straight line from bit to elbow, also look at her eye-line...excellent!
|
Speaking of riding in the summer: Do not underestimate how important it is to drink lots of water! Bring a water bottle with you. Set it where you can reach it while you're in the ring & keep drinking before, during & after riding. NCHJA "C" Show: If you are riding in the "C" Show here on 6/5, schooling will be at Country Acres on Saturday 6/4. Ask your instructor about specific times. What a fun way to end the Riding School year. Horses for partial lease: If you wish there were a horse available for a partial lease, a couple boarders have horses that might be suitable. Please ask your instructor about them. |
4-H News for June

Wildlife Watch Sliders, Cooters & Snappers
Driving across the dam on the way to the Riding School barn, you may have noticed that the logs partially submerged in the pond are occasionally covered with basking turtles. These are most likely "sliders" &/or "cooters." If you disturb them even a little, both sliders & cooters will quickly slip into the water.
They can grow up to a foot long & it's hard to tell the sliders from the cooters. (Sliders have a rounded lower jaw & their shells are more highly domed.)
We also have snapping turtles which live in the pond but they don't usually bask on logs. They get big - up to 50 lbs & have a more prehistoric look with ridges on their backs & tails. They will eat anything they can find including (eww) dead animals. Take heed of their name - they have very powerful jaws.

Quote of the Month
"Preserve [your horse's] mental state by being patient and communicating clearly. It's YOUR job to speak HIS language, not his job to speak yours."
|
As always, we love hearing from you. If you have a suggestion, an idea, or something we should be aware of, please let us know. What would you like to be included next month? If you have an item (or picture) that should be in the newsletter, don't hesitate to get in touch.
Sincerely, the Staff at MacNair's Country Acres
