SHELTER UPDATE

Seb's got a   wheelchair

plus a new  loving home!

Seb Baby

Rescuers found Sebastian as a pup. He was dragging his two legs behind him and he was a pitiful sight to behold. X-rays revealed that an impact - probably from a car - had caused Seb to lose the use of his hind legs.

The pup could still poop and pee normally but serious discussions had immediately begun in the PAWS clinic. The main concern was - if Seb was in any pain - and if he could have a good life even with his disability.

A volunteer who was trying to be optimistic in the midst of all the sad and serious faces brought out a doggie toy and called out to Seb.

The puppy 'leaped' into a frenzy, going into an enthusiastic 'play' mode, running after the offered toy and shaking the toy vigorously once he caught it with his jaws.

The somber group stopped in the middle of their "to-euthanize-or-not-to-euthanize" meeting and looked at each other in disbelief.

Here was a pup who seemed oblivous to the fact that he was a paraplegic dog.

He chased after the toy that was thrown for him again, and after shaking the toy for a few seconds, looked up eagerly - as if to say "Please throw the toy again for me !"

Seb was sunshine on two legs - this was apparent on his first day - and it seemed only fair that he be given a chance to find a loving home, just like the rest of the other 'normal' rescued dogs.

A special dog named Seb One day, as PAWS volunteers Sheila Frasco and Noel Trinchera played with the "special" pup who had now grown into a medium-sized dog, they decided to make him an improvised wheelchair.

Seb had become so rambunctious that just holding him down and keeping him still for the measurement and fittings for the wheelchair was a challenge, but the determined pair persevered.

On April 2011,  Sheila and Noel presented Seb with a wheelchair.

See for yourself how this session went and witness how love and perseverance can make a difference in the life of a rescued dog.

Seb wheeled straight into Tina Agbayani's heart.

Tina - a valued PAWS supporter - had adopted from the shelter before.

She took one look at Seb who was already on his 8th month-stay at PARC and immediately asked, "Okay, when can I take him home?"

Seb is now the best friend and bedmate of Tina's son, Kiered.

Greetings!

PROSECUTING AND EXPOSING CRUELTY

The recent cases on animal cruelty that have been highlighted in the media tell us that there is a growing concern about the way animals are treated in our country.

These are not just foreigners raising the alarm but our fellow Filipinos 'shouting' their indignation loud and clear on social networking sites.

Jerzon Senador who hung a 2-month old puppy by the skin onto a clothesline using "sipit" or clothes pins probably did not pay any attention to the news about Joseph Carlo "JC" Candare - who, in a similar fashion - announced his cruelty for all the world to see on Facebook.

Candare has been convicted while Senador has been formally charged by PAWS for his violation of the Animal Welfare Act.

When we were able to finally track him down in his Calamba home, Senador's parents professed to be animal lovers and simply wanted the episode to be written off as they claimed that their son did not know about the law and was just really fond of taking 'exotic' photos.

The mother even could not fathom why her son was being charged when  - unlike the Candare case - the puppy was 'fine' after the incident. We had to explain that ignorance of the law was not an excuse, and that whether or not the cruel act results in death or injury, charges can be filed.

The family admits that the pup has not seen a vet and yet refused to turn over the animal to PAWS so that "Whitey" can receive proper veterinary attention. They claimed that they would bring the pup to their own vet (whom they could not name) and that they would text me once this has been done. To date, there has been no text or call from the Senadors.

There is much ignorance about animal cruelty and about the law that prosecutes animal offenders. The penalties may be light and there is a current lobby for stiffer fines, longer prison terms and the revocation of rights to own a pet. Until the lobby for the amendment of the Animal Welfare Act is carried out, PAWS' brave band of volunteers continue to commute to Halls of Justice all over the country to make sure that animal offenders are tried in court and convicted.

Finally, we would like to give everyone a happy piece of news: "Tambucho"-killing has been deleted (please see full article below). Our collective voices do achieve results for the animals.

We need your continued support to help speak for voiceless animals. Please consider making a donation to help us file cases against animal cruelty.  Legal cases can drag on for a minimum of  one year to as long as four years  (and still counting, in the case of our court battle vs Danny Sy Tan et.al for the dogfight case).

You can donate online by clicking on this link: http://www.paws.org.ph/site/540/default.aspx.   Clicking on the monthly donation button would be better as it would enable us to plan our projects for the long-term.

Thanking you in advance in behalf of the animals,

puppy on clothesline PAWS files case against  Jerzon Senador

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) filed a criminal case today against Jerzon Senador.

The Calamba native hung his puppy named "Whitey" on a clothesline and bragged about it on his Facebook account, posting photos of the 2-month-old pup clipped and "hung to dry".

"Tambucho" Killing Deleted

Unclaimed dogs and cats in pounds can no longer be legally put down through tambucho-gassing or killing through vehicle exhaust fumes.

Department of Agri
tambucho logoculture Administrative Order number 9 signed by Secretary Proceso Alcala removes ' the use of carbon monoxide coming from vehicle exhaust fumes' as a legal procedure of euthanizing animals. Only "carbon monoxide in cylinders may be used."

"This is a tremendous victory for the animals It means that even those dogs who are not 'paying clients', those virtually deemed as the ones who 'do not matter ' by those who voted for tambucho - will not die painful, agonizing deaths.

We thank Secretary Alcala and Director Nuestro for heeding the call of animal lovers everywhere."

Sabang, Batangas

At PAWS, we know just how much an unspayed or unneutered animal adds to the problem of animal cruelty, so our Spay-Neuter Program this year aims to overtake our 1,107 spay-neuter figures in 2010.

Our recent June 30, 2011 stint in Sabang, Batangas is the third of many out-of-shelter SN outreach projects lined up for 2011.

Little Maya, on the road to recovery

little Maya

She was rescued in Cubao one rainy afternoon. She was hobbling on three legs, front right paw swollen. The poor kitty looked like a drenched bird and so she was named "Maya".

Doc Maripi - the vet who is now fostering her for PAWS - saw that Maya's leg was rotten already and needed amputation, so that was done right away.

Maya is spunky and has started playing only a few days after her operation. She needs continued medication until she fully recovers.

Please help PAWS help Maya and many others like her who are rescued on a daily basis and are in foster homes - check out how you can make an online donation to our Hope for a Second Chance (Medical Fund) on www.paws.org.ph or on this link:  www.paws.org.ph/site/540/default.aspx

Shelter dogs Faro, Makisig, Wendy and Darling tried out the agility course of The A-Maze-ing Garden Adventure at Ayala Triangle last March 6, 2011.

Faro completed the agility course but had a bit of difficulty trying to let go of dug up treats in the sandbox FIND-THE-TREASURE section.

The four dogs acted as ambassadors for PAWS shelter dogs and adoptions at the fun canine event organized by Better Dog Canine Behavior Center which donated a portion of proceeds to PAWS.
