A Mother's Day Appeal for Bambi,

A Special

Doggie Mom

May 8 is Mother's Day and as we honor these important women in our lives, we also want to take this opportunity to make a Mother's Day appeal for one of the longest-staying dogs in our shelter.

Doe-eyed Bambi came into the PAWS shelter in 2009 with another dog who was a victim of neglect.

There was nothing significant nor dramatic about Bambi's rescue. In fact, the other dog who was rescued with her needed more medical attention - he had to have a surgery to remove the outgrown collar embedded deep within his neck.

Bambi was just your regular thin, undernourished dog who seemed very short-tempered.

She would growl and bare her teeth whenever people came near her.

A few days after her rescue, and much to the shelter staff's surprise, Bambi gave birth to six puppies.

Three of the puppies died. The remaining survivors were the utter picture of cuteness.

Visitors doted on Bailey, Bunny and Bruce who all looked like furry little teddy bears.

When the puppies were old enough to be separated from their mom, they were kept in a different quarantine kennel.

Every time touring visitors would ask how big Bailey, Bunny and Bruce could possibly grow up to be, shelter staff would give the standard answer that we would never know for sure, but - to be helpful - would point out the puppies' mom in another kennel.

At this, people would almost always remark in disbelief, "Really? That's the mom?!"

"Maybe the father was the good-looking one," a shelter visitor once joked.

And so all three of Bambi's puppies were adopted in no time at all.

As for Bambi, it took at least a year for her to become the sweet and extremely well-behaved dog that she is today.

She is a dog who is eager to please and one who will look at you intently with those black "eyeliner-lined" eyes when you try to teach her something new.

Bambi is intelligent and we often have the impression that she can understand what people are saying when they converse just outside Dog Run 1.

We hope she has no inkling that, sadly, no one - not a single one of our adoption applicants - has ever picked her as a First Choice for the dog that they want to adopt.

Would you consider giving a forgotten mom a chance at a good life?

Visit Bambi at the PAWS Animal Shelter. She loves sausage treats and leisurely afternoon walks.

April, 2011

Greetings!

The results of a re-voting on tambucho-kill provision (vehicle exhaust fume-gassing) in the law on Euthanasia on April 12, 2011 has shown us that, for some veterinarians and government officials, answers to questions that are so basic such as:

  • does this method cause animal suffering?
  • does this method deserve to be included in an Administrative Order (AO) under the "Animal Welfare Act" ?
  • is this the right thing to do?

are blurred by considerations like cost and availability of the euthanasia drug for animals.

Pro-tambucho proponents do not want to remove the vehicle exhaust-fume gassing method even in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence that it causes immense suffering in animals, taking them a full 10 to 15 minutes before they die.

When lawmakers or policymakers create a law, they should be prepared to take the acid-test. They should ask themselves, "Would it be fair to me, would I want this happening to me or imposed on me?" Crafters of animal welfare laws should be no different.

But those who voted for retention of tambucho-kill  in the law loudly proclaim that they are not FOR it and that they WILL NEVER do it on any of their animal patients.

When we delete tambucho-kill, the implementors are not out of options: there are other methods enumerated in the AO.   There is a movement to make  the euthanasia drug (EUTHAL) more available and affordable - a movement that can be sped up with the help of veterinary associations. In the interim, CARA, AKF and PAWS have also initiated discussions with a chemical engineer to make pure carbon monoxide commercially available in cylinders.

No excuse is left, therefore, for pro-tambucho proponents to keep vehicle exhaust fume-gassing in the AO.

There is no veterinary manual in the world that allows it, no civilized society that will put in a cruel act as an "option" in its laws  and we sincerely hope that

Secretary Proceso Alcala of the Department of Agriculture considers this when a good number of us email him at spja_osec@yahoo.com and spja_osec@da.gov.ph.

Please write that letter now and please write to the other members of the

Committee on Animal Welfare.  Kindly keep your letters respectful and do include a note of thanks to the good Secretary who promised to do what he can to have tambucho-kill or ' gassing via vehicle exhaust fumes' deleted from AO #13.

Thanking you in behalf of the animals

who will be spared from cruel deaths,

This is a graphic video of actual tambucho-killing (killing stray dogs with the use of vehicle exhaust fumes). Pro-tambucho proponents say that - unlike this video- gasoline-powered engine should be used, and the 'handling' of dogs wasn't done right. Newsflash for these people:Tambucho-killing - whether done by diesel or gasoline-powered engine is inhumane. Even if the dogs were gently put into the box, gassing with vehicle exhaust fumes is still going to result in searing pain in the eyes and lungs  for an excruciating 10 to 15 minutes before the dogs die.

Write the Committee on Animal Welfare that this method SHOULD NOT be in the AO for "euthanasia".

EII and PAWS File Charges Against Dolphin Show Organizers

The Earth Island Institute (EII) and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) filed cases against a government official and the promoters of a dolphin and sea lion show staged at the Araneta Center Cubao last Christmas.

Cited in the criminal and administrative complaint before the Ombudsman is Animal Welfare Division Officer-in-Charge Dr. Angel Mateo for granting the permit to the dolphin show which the animal welfare groups say is a form of cruelty.

More Spaying & Neutering at the University of the Philippines  Baguio City

Pet overpopulation is the number 1 cause of animal cruelty. When people are inconvenienced by too many cats or dogs, they turn to cruel dumping or releasing of their pets into the streets or sidewalks. In these situations, dumped ex-housepets are at the highest risk of getting run over or targeted by cruel individuals.

UP Baguio community cats needed spaying and since Doc Wil Almoro was part of the delegation invited to Professor Vicky Costina's book launching of  "Those Who Love Cats", he made the most out of the trip by spaying and neutering seven (7) of the campus cats.

"Hunger (not Curiosity) Killed the Cat"

That's the simple fact, or so we were told.  PAWS has had to struggle extra hard just to make sure we do not go hungry, but it has been difficult.  We've been eating dog food whenever there are no catfood donations.

For those of you who are curious: We eat 22kgs of cat food a day. Quite a lot, but we do need it. There are 255 of us cats in the PAWS Shelter after all.

The cheapest 22 kg bag is at P1,600. Multiply that by 31 days and that's how much money PAWS needs just to buy food every month.

What does a cat need to do to eat?

The PAWS Shelter Director says I need to make an appeal here - in the PAWS e-newsletter. So this is what it is.

Please donate cat food to us and help PAWS keep us healthy until we find our forever-homes.

To repay you, we (or, some of us, at least) will sit on your lap when you come and visit us at the shelter
