Greetings!
As I mentioned last week I want to continue our conversation about the power of our spoken words. In case you missed last week you can read it here. (Last weeks letter)
Our self talk is so ingrained and habitual it is put on autopilot at an early age. Only by persistence and a conscious effort can we turn our self talk around.
One of the biggest problems as I see it, is recognizing destructive self talk. You may see something as truth or fact just because, "that's the way I've always done it, or that's what my parents did."
Wayne Dyer tells a story about a man he knows who when he asked him how long he had had an obvious cold, the man replayed, "in three weeks it will be a month." The point of this humorous little story is our expectations can determine outcome.
I have a good friend who knows me and my unwillingness to partake in negative expectations. Not long ago he was dealing with some physical problems and asked me if I would pray for him. I was happy and honored to do so. We prayed and asked God to heal him. It was a wonderful time and we both agreed that God was doing a work in his life.
In less than a minute another friend walked in the room and asked my friend how he was feeling. He started telling this guy how this hurt and how this other problem just wasn't getting any better. I started laughing and they both stared at me. My friend realizing what he had done started smiling and said, "you're right, you're right. Man it is so easy to slip into old patterns." He turned to our mutual friend and said, "I'm feeling better all the time. God is doing a work in my life."
You might be sitting there saying to yourself, that's just silly. Is it. Science has proven that our physical state is directly related to our frame of mind and who's the first person you talk to about what's on your mind? It's you of course. I can attest first hand to God's healing power. I believe they go hand in hand. What does the Bible say in Romans 12, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
I think everyone has seen the movie "The Lion King". The clip below will be familiar to you. This time look at it with a different frame of mind. Think of it as, you having a conversation with your Father God. I love you guys. Don
