Greetings!
"Oh no, here she comes." That was the thought racing through my head when she made eye contact as I turned down the grocery isle. She is a sweet old lady but every time I see her I make the mistake of asking her how she is doing and I get an earful of everything wrong in her life. Do you know anyone like that?
Contrast that with another sweet old lady I know. (Old to me is now defined as anyone over 80 :-) In spite of 4 heart attacks and major orthopedic surgery she is always smiling and full of life. When you ask her how she's doing she responds, "I'm getting better all the time. My energy is back and I can't wait to see what God has planned for me today." My wife Caroline always says, "I want to be like her when I grow up."
Here's a question for you. Who was being affected by the words they spoke? You're right! they both were. What principles are at play here. Attitude, for sure. Gratitude, absolutely. Here's one maybe you hadn't thought of. The power of the spoken word.
Let me run something by you. Everyone knows that our words can cause pain and discouragement or they can cause hope, joy, and encouragement. The Bible says that God spoke everything into existence. You see I believe being created in the image of God, as the Bible says, we also can create with our spoken words.
Humans are the only creation of God with the ability to create or cause to happen other than for our survival. Everything man-made you see around you began with a thought, everything. It wasn't until those thoughts were spoken, communicated to others, that something was created.
I know your trying to think of something but stay with me. Who is the first person we speak to with a thought about something? Yourself of course. Have you ever known someone who berates themselves? "You idiot, what were you thinking." "That always happens to me" "That's just my luck" "I'm too old, too young etc."
You see when you do that you are creating something just as concrete as the house around you. You are speaking those things into fact and the longer you do it the thicker the wall around you becomes and the harder it is to tear it down.
I would like to continue this subject in the next letter because I've just scratched the surface and this is getting long. Until then, if your not already doing so, speak only the words that will move you forward. Speak words that will uplift and encourage you. I love you guys. Don
