August Business After Hours

Thank you to W.H. Gross Construction for sponsoring the August Business After Hours and to the City of Kingsland for hosting at the New North Center Facility.  The building was absolutely beautiful and everyone involved in re-creating and renovating the building did an awesome job.  Not being a native of Camden County, when you walk into the building you actually get a feel of what life was like in the past.  Job well done!  If you didn't attend this outstanding networking opportunity, you  missed out on meeting some great new people that have never attended BAH in the past, our new members and an opportunity to mingle with the Kingsland City Council and staff.  If you have a chance to stop by the Kingsland North Center Facility, please do, you won't be sorry!

Our September 17th Business After Hours is co-sponsored & hosted by Hippo Storage and Murrell Custom Homes held at Hippo Storage located at 1055 E King Avenue, Kingsland from 5-7 pm.  This is another BAH you don't want to miss.  See first hand how Jim and Linda have transformed the old 84 Lumber into a beautiful storage facility.  Join us for great networking, food and fun!

College of Coastal Georgia Exceeds Their Enrollment Goal

The College of Coastal Georgia have nearly final Fall Semester enrollment numbers, and the College has set several new records. They have exceeded their lofty, target goal of 3,000 academic college students! They now stand at 3,065, an increase of 24.6% over their academic enrollment of 2,459 for fall 2008. The numbers will even increase a bit as final paperwork is filed.

After the mission change and transitioning the technical programs, they expected their enrollment to drop and predicted it could be at least fall 2010 before they might hope to reach 3,000. Yet, right now, they have exceeded (by nearly 150 students) total enrollment for last fall, which included all of the technical program students. The fall enrollment numbers include 82 juniors in the first wave of the new baccalaureate programs and 920 entering freshman (a record for the College).

In addition, they have seen an even greater increase in credit hours being taken, which makes their growth in full-time equivalents (FTE) more pronounced than enrollment alone. There have never been this many students enrolled or this many courses taken at this College.

Coastal Regional Commission's (CRC) Two New Transportation Programs

The Regional Rural Public Transit Program provides demand-response, advance reservation public transportation in nine of the ten coastal counties.  This reservation system facilitates passenger travel to-and-from appointments, health care centers, and provides rides for residents in assisted living or nursing homes, homebound or to visit family, friends, or a trip to the mall or grocery store.

Commuter travel to and from the Savannah area constitutes the most significant travel pattern within the region.  Regional Vanpool Program is designed to provide reliable and cost-effective transportation to employees commuting to and from work.  This program provides incentives for businesses and industries that elect to participate and also to the workforce for whom it's designed to support.

SMALL BUSINESS SUCCESS STRATEGIES IN TOUGH TIMES

In today's uncertain economy, small business owners are challenged with not only how to maintain revenues; they are struggling with credit issues, and how to meet the ever-changing needs of their customers, vendors, and employees.

What should your business be doing right now to be in a position to survive and even thrive in the coming months and years?  This seminar will provide recommendations for specific strategies for your business that address the current business climate with managing your cash flow, human resources, and marketing in the tough times of an economic downturn, while also providing guidance on how to plan and implement such changes.  The program presents examples of companies which have used these strategies effectively to improve their revenue and profitability during tough times.

Alyce Thornhill, Director of Economic Development for the City of St. Marys wanted to explain that, "This class is at no cost to our businesses; our community is at risk of losing our most precious resource, St. Marys small businesses.  We all need to work together and shop local!"   The Georgia Small Business Development Center, Camden Chamber of Commerce Small Business Committee, St. Marys Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and our SCORE branch will sponsor this opportunity.  The class will be held in the St. Marys Economic Development Building at 400 Osborne Street at 5:30pm on September 8th.  For more information about the class please call the City of St. Marys DDA at 912-882-8111.
