NEON at the Ecological Society of America (ESA) Meeting
NEON will be at the ESA meeting in Pittsburgh, PA next week.  Please visit us at our exhibit booth, or mingle with the NEON team at the Meet & Greet (Wednesday), or check out one of the many talks that NEON will be giving.  A list of all the places where we'll be can be found here.
NEON, Inc. Membership Meeting (Reston, VA) on 9/24/10
Membership Meeting
The membership meeting is held annually for NEON, Inc. member institutions in good standing.  Each institution is invited to send two representatives:  the designated institutional representative, and another individual.  The second individual has typically been a member of the member institution's senior administrative team.  This year, however, we are also encouraging early career scientists (advanced grad students, postdocs, or scientists in positions less than 3 years) to attend as the second representative.  Limited travel assistance for such applicants, submitted by the designated institutional representative, are available.  Details of the membership meeting are available here
Corporate Roadmap Development
Roadmap Development Process
As previously announced, NEON, Inc.'s Board and senior executive staff are working together on a "roadmap development process" for the corporate entity. Through this process, NEON, Inc. will refine the organization's strategic goals over the next 3 to 5 as construction of the Observatory proceeds as well as consider the most appropriate role(s) for NEON, Inc., over the longer-term (5 to 10 years).

At this stage in the process, Meridian Institute (the non-profit organizational facilitating the process) is engaging key partners and interested parties, including current members and government agencies, in discussions to identify key opportunities and challenges for NEON, Inc. as it seeks to advance environmental science and serve the environmental sciences community.

Member engagement is vital to the roadmap development process, and the September 24, 2010, membership meeting will be an important opportunity for members to participate in the process and help shape NEON, Inc.'s future. Meridian will share a summary of progress on this effort and solicit your input on specific questions and issues regarding execution and use of the Observatory, development of NEON, Inc., and your role as member institutions of NEON, Inc.

  • Advances in Biological Informatics
    • Excerpt:  The Advances in Biological Informatics (ABI) program seeks to encourage new approaches to the analysis and dissemination of biological knowledge for the benefit of both the scientific community and the broader public. The ABI program is especially interested in the development of informatics tools and resources that have the potential to advance, or transform, research in biology supported by the Directorate for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation.
    • Critical dates:  August 23, 2010
  • Macrosystems Biology
    • Excerpt:  NSF invites proposals from interdisciplinary teams of scientists to conduct innovative, integrated, systems-oriented "macrosystems biology" research to detect, understand and forecast the consequences of climate and land use change and invasive species on the biosphere at regional to continental scales. Proposals should address the scales where the ecological research challenges are the greatest and where research has the greatest potential to transform the field of ecology by addressing scaling issues that have long hindered development of large-scale ecology.  Projects should strive to provide a mechanistic understanding of how multiple scale dynamics contribute to the structure, functioning, and change of the biosphere, and lead to the development of a more predictive understanding of ecological change.  Proposals should be well grounded in theory, include novel approaches that will result in a theoretical framework for a predictive understanding of macroscale biology, and shows great promise for enhancing basic theoretical understandings.
    • Critical dates:  Full proposal due September 16, 2010.
  • Informal Science Education (ISE)
    • Excerpt:  The ISE program supports innovation in anywhere, anytime, lifelong learning, through investments in research, development, infrastructure, and capacity-building for STEM learning outside formal school settings.
    • Critical dates:  Full proposals due:  December 7, 2010.
