NSF Environmental Synthesis Center
Environmental Synthesis CenterThe recent NSF solicitation for an Environmental Synthesis Center mentions NEON, OOI and other NSF observatories as potential partners. NEON is excited to provide transformational capabilities in support of current or potential future NSF solicitations and welcomes inquiries from prospective Principal Investigators.   NSF's proposed investment in NEON infrastructure, and particularly data and data management capability, workflow environment for complex models and algorithms and data publishing capability, would be available to a Synthesis Center.  As an NSF Facility, NEON will provide infrastructure to the scientific and educational communities, including future research projects, Centers and other activities.

However, as an NSF-supported Implementing Organization, NEON, Inc. cannot offer exclusive support to any proposal in any way that would unfairly affect the outcome of competition. Please contact the NEON Principal Investigator with any inquiries (dschimel@neoninc.org).
NSF Program Officers / Federal Interagency NEON Briefing
March 2010 NSF Federal Interagency BriefingAs part of NSF's ongoing effort to foster cooperation between Federal agencies on climate change related science and education, NSF Bio organized a joint briefing for NSF Program officers and representatives from other Federal agencies on 3/5/10.  The 90 minute briefing was attended by over 60 persons with about two dozen others joining in remotely.  This reflects an increasing level of interest in the use of NEON as a platform for enabling research and operational activities.

NEON, Inc. and the Department of Interior have recently stepped up interactions aimed at designing specific activities that leverage each organization's unique capabilities in the areas of data sharing, data integration, development of adaptation and mitigation strategies, communications, and education.  NSF and NEON, Inc. leadership will continue to extend our collective efforts to foster data and process interoperability between government entities, both within and outside the United States.
NEON on the International Scene

  • NEOGlobe - International SceneN, Inc. staff attended the GEO-BON (Group on Earth Observations - Biodiversity Observation Network) workshop (Asilomar, CA, Feb 23 - 25, 2010).  Michael Keller and Cara Gibson contributed to a plan for coordinating international biodiversity observations in support of US GEO.  The United States, working through the USGEO, is a founding member and vital contributor to the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO).  This group is developing GEOSS, the Global Earth Observing System of Systems.

  • NEON was represented at the Canadian Carbon Program (Montreal, Canada, February 26-28, 2010) meeting by Michael Keller.  Dr. Keller presented a summary talk on NEON science plans and discussed mechanisms for sharing of data and protocols.

  • NSF hosted a workshop for the United Kingdom Natural Environment Research Council (Arlington, VA, Mar 1 - 2, 2010) with a focus on Critical Zone Science.  The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of the Hydrological Sciences (CUAHSI), Critical Zone Observatory (CZO) program, and NEON were the US NSF funded observatories featured at the workshop.  NEON was jointly represented by Elizabeth Blood (NSF), Montona Futrell-Griggs (NSF), and Brian Wee.
Solicitations

(Please click the respective links to check the original source of information.  The abbreviated text below may not reflect amendments to the original announcements, and may not reflect the original intent of the solicitation.)
  • NSF / Dimensions of Biodiversity
    • Excerpt:  The Dimensions of Biodiversity initiative seeks to characterize biodiversity on Earth by using integrative, innovative approaches to fill rapidly the most substantial gaps in our understanding of the diversity of life on Earth. This campaign will take a broad view of biodiversity, and in its initial phase will focus on the integration of genetic, taxonomic, and functional dimensions of biodiversity.
    • Critical dates:  Letter of intent due May 7 2010.  Full proposal due June 8, 2010.
  • NSF / Climate Change Education (CCE): Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) Program, Phase I  (CCEP-I)
    • Excerpt:  The Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) program seeks to establish a coordinated national network of regionally- or thematically-based partnerships devoted to increasing the adoption of effective, high quality educational programs and resources related to the science of climate change and its impacts.  Each CCEP is required to be of a large enough scale that they will have catalytic or transformative impact that cannot be achieved through other core NSF program awards.
    • Critical dates:  Letter of intent due April 23, 2010.  Full proposal due May 24, 2010.
  • NSF / Cyberinfrastructure Training, Education, Advancement, and Mentoring for Our 21st Century Workforce  (CI-TEAM)
    • Excerpt:  Linked to create a comprehensive cyberinfrastructure, the systems, tools, and services emerging from new technologies are enabling individuals, groups, and organizations to advance research and education in ways that revolutionize who can participate, what they can do, and how they do it.  The CI-TEAM program supports projects that position the national science and engineering community to engage in integrated research and education activities promoting, leveraging and utilizing cyberinfrastructure systems, tools and services.
    • Critical dates:  Full Proposal due April 27, 2010.
