National Science Board Gives Final Approval for NEON
|
The National Science Board (NSB) met May 4 - 5, 2010 at NSF (Arlington, VA). The NSB authorized the NSF Director, at his discretion, to issue a five-year award to NEON, Inc. for the construction of NEON. However, any such award is contingent upon approval and appropriation by Congress and NSF completing its Endangered Species Act and National Historic Preservation Act compliance for the 106 NEON sites.
This is a major development for NEON coming on the heels of recent developments like the successful completion of the NSF Final Design Review and inclusion in President Obama's FY11 Budget Request to Congress. NSF is also to be applauded for its continued stewardship of the research community through its recent solicitations for interdisciplinary research at the regional to continental scales (Macrosystems Biology and Decadal and Regional Climate Prediction using Earth System Models).
The NEON, Inc. Board of Directors would like to thank the membership for its continued support of NEON, Inc., and hope to see your continued involvement as the corporation continues to prepare for the start of NEON construction.
