Sandblast Carved & Half Toned Glass Re-creation

Typically artists are commissioned to design and create original pieces. However, when the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino needed to replace a broken 50 year-old carved glass door of their main entry, Glass Impressions Las Vegas owner and artist, Scott Newman, was up for the challenge.
The doors date back to the opening of the hotel, which made it virtually impossible to track down the original artist of the work. No one was sure if the artist was still alive or even able to re-create the broken one-of-a-kind piece if found.
Golden Nugget turned to established local glass artist, Scott Newman, to mimic the ornate Victorian design. Newman had to redraw the pattern by hand three times just to match the original.
 We asked Newman if he thought recreating a piece was more difficult than producing an original, to which he replied, "Recreating is not exactly more difficult than producing originals; however, it is more time consuming. The Golden Nugget project took one month to complete because it required a long process of drawing, redrawing onto carbon paper, numbering the depth of each carve, and making sure it all matched the original." Project Fabrication & Specs: Material: 1/2" Clear Laminated Glass provided by Glasswerks Inc.
1) Redraw art on paper by hand
2) Transfer art onto thick etching vinyl
3) Hand cut the design out of vinyl
4) Sandblast the art
5) Clean the glass
6) Install glass (by Accuracy Glass)
Newman, an experienced craftsman, can carve art out of a variety of materials: plexi glass, metal, and glass. 
He did, however, reveal his favorite canvas:
"Glass is more fun, especially when you add lighting. With my background in theatrical lighting, I love to play with that reflective property that is unique to glass--it captures and bounces light like no other material."
