Glasswerks is proud to now offer one of PPG Industries' newest performance glazing products:

GRAYLITE® II glass (right) is an almost-black glass that retains the aesthetic appearance of original Graylite glass (left) while providing enhanced solar control performance.

• In a one-inch insulating glass unit with clear glass  
• Solar heat-gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.21, 36 percent greater than the original composition.  
• Retains the aesthetic appearance of the original glass, but has slightly lower visible light transmittance (VLT) of 8 percent.

Great Glasswerk: 

Nagato Glass Awning,

West Hollywood, CA

However, instead of installing a regular patio awning--which isn't as durable to sun, rain, and other elements--the Nagato's opted for a glass awning for a more long-lasting and modern solution to their Hollywood home. Skip Abelson teamed up with Glasswerks to create yet another Great Glasswerk. [See all the pictures in hi-resolution now.]

"Mrs. Nagato wanted an almost 'museum' look to her home, she likes things that are sharp, crisp and exact.

Product Fabrication & Specs:

• Glasswerks provided 9/16" laminated tempered glass at 60% white.  

• Glasswerks Custom Fabrication: flat polished edges, bored 4 holes at 1/2" into each panel.

• 1st floor awning required 1 glass panel with a 16 sq. ft. area; the 2nd floor: 8 panels totaling 114 sq. ft. of glass

•  Awning System GAS90BS by C.R. Laurence.  

A Challenging Project - See Number Key Below

 Unique Challenges:   

1. The wall plates needed to be through-bolted with the back plates; not an easy task.  

2. Shortened exterior wallheight above the awning required custom tension rods with a minimum angle of 35°

3. The glass awning needed to appear free floating, so additional design templates had to be made and adjusted on site. The extra attention to detail ensured the fixtures held the glass panels in proper position.

4. The awning fixtures had NO allowance for adjustment. The slightest variation in wall flatness or through-bolt holes would result into uneven gaps between glass panels--specifically 1/4" gaps.  

Lessons Learned:   

  "We began modifying the fixtures and panels to troubleshoot the misalignment, and luckily 

Glasswerks helped polish off as much as a fat 1/6" to the glass panels that conformed to the new plans.  

  Skip concludes, "In the future we will make templates that weigh the same as the glass and will modify the hardware in order to make slight adjustments when and where possible."
