Dear Reid Supporter:
Our Legal Updates and Newsletter is published quarterly to help keep you informed with John E. Reid & Associates and what is happening in the courts throughout the nation. We know with so much information it can become confusing, so we developed a search engine on our web page. If you have questions about particular subjects such as "recording interrogations", just type the subject in the search engine for the latest information. Click here to see.
We also want to make you aware that we have implemented a survey/question in your seminar notices. The survey will usually include one or two questions and take only minutes to complete. Each month we will change the question for constant "new" feedback. Your answers may be used in future development of correspondence, newsletters and investigator tips. We want to thank you in advance for taking the time to help us help you.
Remember you can now download the 2012 Brochure and the 2012 Catalog. You can also find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter where we post the latest articles, news and updates we find. Sincerely, Joseph P. Buckley President |

Bob Farley Teaching at the Vatican

On October 21, 2011, John E. Reid training instructor Robert Hugh Farley became the first police officer to ever conduct a child sexual abuse training seminar for the clergy in the Vatican - Rome. The two-day seminar consisted of an international overview of the child sexual abuse problem, identification of child molester profiles and strategies for the prevention of child abuse. The audience, at the Vatican Pontifical College, consisted of approximately 300 members of the Roman Catholic clergy. Farley's seminar was well received by the clergy as he addressed this difficult subject matter in a manner intended to raise awareness while using restraint so as to not offend or appear accusatory.
The Vatican seminar was not the first international child abuse training seminar for Farley as he has also conducted child abuse training seminars in twenty-two countries for INTERPOL. In addition, he supervised the investigation of child sexual abuse allegations at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Farley, who has been an instructor with John E. Reid since 2007, is the former commanding officer of the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department, Child Exploitation Unit in Chicago. For information on sponsoring any of Farley's three exceptional child abuse training seminars offered by John E. Reid please contact Debbie Plese at 888-255-1635.
The Reid Technique Recognized by Ed Sanow, Editorial Director of Law and Order Magazine
Several months ago Ed Sanow, Editorial Director of Law and Order magazine, attended our three day seminar (taught by Mark Reid). In the November issue of the magazine the Featured Article is his write up about the Reid Technique. In his concluding paragraph he states the following:
"Every detective should attend the course. And not just new detectives. It will help every detective who has had the guilty suspect sitting right in front of them, but just couldn't get the confession. The three-day course is also excellent for all patrol officers and sheriff's deputies in smaller towns and cities without detective units - where the same patrol officer takes the initial call, performs the investigation, and conducts the interview. The Reid Technique deserves its legendary status in law enforcement." Read the article here.

Juan Rivera Conviction Overturned
The Danger of Feeding Information to a Suspect During an Interrogation
One of the key guidelines that we teach in our courses and books is that the investigator should conceal details about the crime so that when a suspect confesses and provides those concealed details they can be used to corroborate the confession. If the investigator reveals the details about the crime in the interrogation through the use of leading questions, "She had a multi-colored shirt on, right?" (from the Rivera case) it eliminates the use of that information to corroborate the suspect's confession.
In their opinion, overturning the conviction of Juan Rivera (based primarily on DNA evidence) in paragraph 44 of their opinion, the court expresses their concern for the use of leading questions during the interrogation and the validity of the subsequent confession.

"I recently retired from my department. Early in my career as a detective, and before the internet, I heard of your program. And I had the good fortune to be sent to both courses. In the course of time, I used the techniques that I was taught. Two recollections come to my mind. First, after trial a young prosecutor in his office commented on my summary of the defendant's confession, "How the hell do you do it?" Second, on my last day as I looked in my bathroom mirror asked myself the question. My answer was, NO! I never put an innocent person in jail. Thank You for the most valuable tool in my cop toolbox."I remain grateful, Robert Muncy LEO/I ret.
