Dear Reid Supporter:
The Spring Edition Newsletter continues our theme of change. Besides our reduced seminar pricing for 2011 and changed email formats we've developed new training programs, created electronic formats in which our Reid products can be downloaded, and organized our Legal Updates by topic making it easier for our readers to access.
Forensic Interviewing for Attorneys and The Reid Technique of Investigative Interviewing are two new classes we now offer. Changes to our Reid products include five different Audio Training programs now available for download from our website. Also, thanks to a suggestion shared on our Facebook page, we are in the developmental stages of formatting four of our books into an electronic version to allow for download to the Nook, Ipad or other electronic devices.
Read the 'Reid News' block below for the details of the changes we've made.
Your continued support of our seminars and training products is always appreciated. Please continue to share your ideas, questions and comments with us on our Facebook page, via email or other form of communication.
Sincerely,
Joseph P. Buckley President |

'Forensic Interviewing for Attorneys'- We now offer an adaptation of the Reid Technique of Interrogation for use by attorneys. This is a one-day CLE program which teaches field tested principles of detection of deception and non-coercive elicitation of information for use during depositions, witness interviews, and trial testimony. These principles are not taught within conventional law school curricula or CLE programs and are intended for use during questioning both of cooperative as well as adverse, hostile, and reluctant witnesses. At the end of almost every investigation is an attorney or prosecutorial body that takes the investigator's evidence to 'the next level'. Please take a moment to reach out to those attorneys to whom you transmit your own investigative findings and make them aware of Reid's 'Forensic Interviewing For Attorneys' CLE program which has qualified for at least 6.5 hours of CLE credit in every jurisdiction where the course has been presented. This program is presented 'in-house' only and has been well received around the country by offices of the United States Attorney, States' Attorneys General, Military JAG Corp, and the United States Justice Department. For more information click here or call Debbie Plese at 888-255-1635. Read More 'The Reid Technique of Investigative Interviewing' - In order to meet the needs of those organizations and individuals who conduct investigative interviews but may not engage in any type of accusatory interrogation we have developed a specialized two day training program. This new training program focuses on how to most efficiently and effectively conduct a non-accusatory investigative interview, and how to assess the credibility of the information that was developed during the interview. DOES "HOPE OF BENEFIT" NULLIFY A CONFESSION?
In the case of State v. Brown (March 2011) the Court of Appeals of Georgia found that a statement to the suspect by the interrogator that "no matter what you tell me or say... you're going home" did not create such a "hope of benefit" when viewed in light of the totality of circumstances.
" The reward of a lighter sentence is generally what is meant by the phrase "hope of benefit," as used in OCGA § 24-3-50. When an accused is made a promise concerning a collateral benefit, however, his subsequent confession is not excludable. Indeed, we have previously held that statements referring to an accused going home after an interview are collateral promises that in no way relate to the sentence or charges facing the suspect. Additionally, we have held that a hope of benefit may be dispelled by a statement that an officer has no influence over an accused's possible punishment."
