In Memory of...

Dear Loyal Alpen Schatz Customer

 It is with great sadness...

Smokie Mountain Flowers
Smokie Bear in Alpine Flowers

that we have recently lost our Smokie Bear, co-founder of  Alpen Schatz (along with Schlappi, who we lost 3 years ago).

"Smokie Bear", AKC Garland Ridge's Alpen Schatz
Aug 21, 2002 - Feb 24, 2012

Smokie Bear was a large part of the Alpen Schatz community from the very start. He was right by our side during the beginning days of our web-site and then was a large part of the Alpen Schatz Boutique that we later opened in Telluride, Colorado.

He played collar model, dog greeter, and gave "doggie fixes" to many Telluride visitors who were missing their dogs. He had fans that would come back year after year just to pet him and say "HI". He must have been part of over a thousand pictures that people took of him in our little Boutique shop over the years.

Smokie Bear was also a working dog:
He was the chief wagon puller in our 4th of July Parade each of the 8 years we lived in Telluride. He hiked the mountains in sun, rain, wind and snow and even wore his own backpack for overnight adventures.

He participated in many road trips around the USA, staying in some of the Nation's top Pet Friendly Hotels . He assisted as Chief Dog Critic in the articles I would write after our visits for "Fido Friendly Magazine".

He was a great mentor to his baby Berner brother, Valentino, who came along after Schlappi passed.
He had a HUGE HEART and LOVING SOUL

WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU SMOKIE BEAR!

Highlights of the Westminster Dog Show 2012 in NYC

Alpen Schatz was honored to have a booth once again at the Host Hotel to the

Westminster Dog Show, held every February at Madison Square Garden. The Hotel Pennsylvania, not only hosts the majority of the Breeders and Grand Champion show dogs entered in the show, but also an excercise, potty and grooming area to prep the dogs.

We enjoyed meeting many of the top dogs in the nation - some breeds of which we had no idea existed - as well as dog loving visitors coming to watch this exciting event.

It was wonderful to meet Alpen Schatz fans who lived in the area or who were attending the show who visited our booth with their beautiful dogs decked out in Alpen Schatz apparel (See this month's Happy Customer Dogs featured below.)

We also took a trip across the road to Madison Square Garden during the show to see what really happens right before the dogs enter the main ring to compete.

ENJOY THE SHOW!

Happy Customer: OSCAR THE GROUCH

Oscar in Red Swiss Cross Collar

Westminster Show Greater Swiss Celebrity, Oscar the Grouch, came to visit us on our booth to show off

his beautiful

 Red Swiss Cross Collar

that he proudly wears everywhere. He came for a fitting for a

Swiss Carting Harness

which looked stunning on him.

A Grand Champion before the age of 2 years old, Oscar was the youngest Greater Swiss Mountain Dog competing in the show. In addition, he was one of the few, if not the only entered dog living within walking distance of Madison Square Garden...so he was truly competing in his own neighborhood!  He was part of quite a bit of Westminster media coverage during the show, and he proudly wore his Alpen Schatz collar throughout.

THANK YOU  OSCAR for looking so fine in your Alpen Schatz collar!

Below you'll find some of the Westminster Media he was featured in.

At Westminster we had the pleasure of meeting Scount's proud Mom, who purchased the perfect Swiss Traditional Collar and Leash set (Red with Silver) for her beautiful white lab called "Scout" who was back in Denver, Colorado.

It turns out that Scout's owner, Laura Humes, is a passionate photographer based in Denver. She loves to photograph dogs and wildlife and sent us these two beautiful portraits of her Scout in our Swiss collar and leash.

Should you like to see more of her work go to http://pawtraitspetphotography.com/
