Prayer

Advent

Merciful God, who didst send thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

 - Collect for Second Sunday of Advent, Book of Common Prayer, p. 159

Bishop's Prayer

A Simple Prayer of Commitment:

Come Holy Spirit; fill me so that I can: Dedicate my heart to Christ Jesus, open my mind to seek truth and justice, lift up my hands to welcome the outcast and care for the borken, behold with my eyes the wonders of creation, hear with my ears the story of God in the world, and sing with my lips a song of God's love - with laughter and without worry.  And always in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

 - As shared in the Annual Meeting of the Convention 2011

Vision & Goals
 VISION

All Episcopalians in Hawai`i shall work together to create a Church filled with visible and spirit-driven Christians - Christians who are eager to share our Episcopal tradition and faith, and traditional Hawaiian spiritual values, with those who have not yet found a spiritual anchor in their lives.

GOALS

1)  Convert our Hearts to Accept Jesus' Gospel Message and to Live in a Deep Relationship with God.
2)  Transform the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i and Congregations to Vital and Vibrant Faith Communities.
3)  Evangelize to Share God's Love in Our Communities.
4)  Reduce the structure and administration costs of the Diocese so that its operations, including its bodies, are directed to supporting transformation and growth.

The Five Marks of Mission of the Worldwide Anglican Communion:

1)  To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom

2)  To teach, baptize and nurture new believers

3)  To respond to human need by loving service

4)  To seek to transform unjust structures of society

5)  To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

Application/nomination forms available for Episcopal Youth Presence at General Convention 2012

general convention logo[December 8, 2011] Are you an Episcopal youth, or know one who would like to learn about the governance of the church while providing a needed service? Then consider the Episcopal Youth Presence at General Convention 2012.

Eighteen positions, representing two from each Province of the Episcopal Church, are opened to youth to participate in the 77th General Convention, scheduled for July 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 5 to July 12.

Bronwyn Clark Skov, Episcopal Church Officer for Youth Ministries, addressed both the importance and the honor of these positions. "The General Convention Official Youth Presence was established by an initial resolution in 1982," she explained. "The Official Youth Presence members have seat and voice on the floor of the House of Deputies during the legislative sessions and that is an exciting prospect for the youth of our church."

For more information and details on the process, eligibility requirements and forms, please visit the Diocesan website HERE.

TULIP Coverage no longer available By June Choriki

For the past year, the Diocese has offered Philadelphia Insurance Companies' Tenant Users Liability Insurance Protection (TULIP).  It was uniquely designed to provide short-term liability insurance coverage to an individual or organization using a congregation's facilities for a non-congregation-sponsored event. The policy has expired as of December 1, 2011, and will not be renewed because of the low interest in this insurance coverage.

Blue Christmas at the Cathedral of St. Andrew

A Service of Reflection for the Longest Night

By Karen Sender

blue christmas candles

On Wednesday, December 21, at 5:30 p.m. in the Cathedral, we will gather for "Blue Christmas: a Service of Reflection for the Longest Night".  Held on the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, it recognizes that there is darkness in all our lives, that not everyone is merry at Christmastime.  Through music, silent meditation, scripture, and healing prayer, we reach out to acknowledge sadness with comfort and quiet remembrance, to reflect on the losses we have experienced and to remember together, whatever our spiritual path, the real reason for the season:  that we are not alone, and that light will come again.  Whether you are having a difficult time this holiday season or just want a moment of quiet, please come.  If you know someone who is sad, struggling, or alone, please invite them to attend.  Everyone is welcome.  For more information:  Call 524-2822, ext. 217, or visit the Diocesan website HERE .

Presiding Bishop's Christmas 2011 Message

See, your salvation comes - Isaiah 62:11

Jefferts Schori[December 15, 2011] The great prophets before Jesus proclaimed a vision of a nation and a people redeemed.  We continue to share that yearning - as the Christmas hymn puts it, "the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight."  We've seen abundant hopes spring up in the past year across the Arab world and Eastern Europe, and in the global Occupy movement.  Those voices seek a world of greater justice, communities in which decisions and the gifts of creation are more available to all.  Our understanding of salvation is most profoundly about justice in community, and as Christians we believe that help and healing for all are grounded in the incarnate presence of God - among us and within us.

We look for salvation to the one who came among us in the most humble way, a helpless child born in a scandalous way to a poor peasant couple.  The Incarnation, God with us, changed the world in ways that we insist are leading to the ultimate healing of all creation.  "See, your salvation comes," says the prophet in every age, yet it is not yet fully come upon us.  We live in hope for its fullness.  May hope be nourished within us, in each and every human being and community, for the journey toward God's healed and holy future.

That proclamation of coming salvation is a part of Isaiah (Isa 62:6-12) that will be read in some congregations at Christmas, but if you don't hear it, go and read the whole of it.  Its centerpiece speaks of what that salvation looks like:

The Lord has sworn...
I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies,
  and foreigners shall not drink the wine for which you have labored;
but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the Lord,
and those who gather it shall drink it in my holy courts.
Isa 62:8-9

That is not a vision of pristine isolation, but a vision of comfort and healing to a people frequently at war, occupied, or exploited by superior forces.  The fear of powerful others taking and using for themselves the produce of the poor is healed and transformed into a society in which the gifts God provides will be shared by all.  For when salvation comes, that society will

be called, 'the Holy People, The Redeemed of the Lord';
and you shall be called, 'Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.'
Isa 62:12

Jesus comes among us to remind us of a world living together in peace, to reclaim and make real that vision of creation for all humanity and all God's creatures. That world is put right as relationships between God and humanity are set right. The relationship between God and human being cannot be set right without equal healing of relationships between us mortals.  See, your salvation comes!  Will we welcome that healing?

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

New Faith in Action ads focus on year-round stewardship

Build-stewardship ad[December 5, 2011] To assist in promoting year-round stewardship, a series of ads have been created by the Episcopal Church Office of Communication for use by dioceses and congregations at no cost.  Based on the theme Faith In Action, a different ad is available each month, featuring an appropriate illustration and short message, plus the tagline "Give to your Episcopal Church."

"The purpose of the Faith in Action campaign is to provide the means for congregations and dioceses to offer monthly reminders about stewardship and thanksgiving, not just at stewardship time," noted Anne Rudig, Director of Communication.

The ads were designed for multiple uses, including websites, online publications and in printed newsletters and bulletins.

"Creating cultures of gratitude and generosity is a year-round process, this does not happen simply on a day or in a season," noted the Rev. Laurel Johnston, Program Officer for Stewardship. "The monthly announcements will remind us to embrace a practice of giving as part of our walk with Christ and with one another. Gratitude for all that has been given is the primary response of Christian stewards -- a response that needs to be cultivated and celebrated year round."

The ads are available HEREAmong the messages on the ads are: Leap for Joy - your reward is great; Serve as a witness to God's bounty; Surprise: Faithfulness with spring up from the ground; Prepare an offering to the Lord.
