Yeshiva University Professor Gillian Steinberg visits NYHS

by Rabbi Benjy Owen

On Thursday morning, Professor Gillian Steinberg, Assistant Professor of English and Director of English Composition at Yeshiva University, led a very engaging and interesting roundtable discussion with our faculty about best practices regarding teaching writing.  Professor Steinberg is in Seattle to attend and make a presentation at the Modern Language Association (MLA) conference.  During the discussion, Professor Steinberg encouraged us to think about how we teach our students to revise their writing and how we help our students develop their own "reader's eye" in addition to a "writer's eye".  We also discussed how to teach students to overcome their own barriers to revising their writing.

We are very appreciative to Professor Steinberg for spending yesterday morning at Northwest Yeshiva High School.  We are also very thankful to Yeshiva University's Institute for University-School Partnership who sponsored and helped coordinate this program.

Basketball this Week

Grace Almo
by Grace Almo 2013

After returning from a restful break, our teams were ready to hit the court the first day back. Both the men and women's team practiced several times during break, but had no games.

On January 3rd, all of our teams played a league game against Christian Faith.

The mens' Junior Varsity played a strong game. Raffy Naim, junior, helped keep the energy by bringing the ball down court quickly. Joel Jacobs, junior, aided the team by playing composed and consistently. After a good game, we finished off with a win by about 20 points!  Read more here

This week we welcomed quite a few alumni back to campus.  Thank you to Shoshana Goldberg 2010, Tanya Friedland 2010, AJ DeLeon 2011, Jamie Schwartz 2011 and Leslie Golden 2009 for stopping by.

Jamie Schwartz 2011
AJ DeLeon 2011
Shoshana Goldberg 2010
Tanya Friedland 2010
Leslie Golden 2009

Leslie Golden 2009

Leslie is a junior at Brandeis majoring in Biology. This past semester she had the opportunity to do research in a Microbiology lab. As of now, she is considering her options after graduation and likely will pursue a Masters in Biology.

Leslie spent this past summer in New York working at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. She worked with diabetic mice and mice with breast cancer. She also enjoyed a trip to England with her grandma.

Besides her studies, Leslie is active in Hillel and serves on the Hillel Board as the Shabbat and Festival Meals Coordinator. She told us that the Brandeis Hillel does a lot of joint programming with the many Hillels in the area. Leslie is working on a inter-Hillel mixer with MIT, Harvard, Tufts, Boston University and other local area universities.

She often sees fellow NYHS alumni around campus.

Itai, Andrew, AJ, Reid, Samuel and Avi
Itai Amon 2013, Andrew Orenstein 2012, AJ DeLeon 2011, Reid Alberstone 2012, Samuel Cohen 2012 and Avi Amon 2012

AJ and Samuel were on campus visiting this week.  AJ graduated last June and attends Tulane.  Samuel was in the class of 2012 but moved to NY in his sophomore year.  Great to have both young men back on campus!

Tanya and Shoshana

Tanya Friedland 2010 and Shoshana Goldberg 2010 visited campus this week. Look for alumni updates in next week's Bulletin.

Note from Rachel Weinstein 2008

Rachel and Zelle

Rachel Weinstein 2008 and Zelle Rettman 2010 at Brandeis

I'm a senior at Brandeis University this year, so I'll be graduating in May (it's hard to believe it's already been four years since I graduated from Yeshiva!) I majored in Public Health and minored in Business, and am happy to say that I plan to work for a finance company in Boston next year.

I've been very involved with Jewish life on campus, both within the Brandeis Orthodox Organization and the Brandeis Chabad student organization. I've also been juggling a full courseload with a job doing marketing and PR work for Cure Alzheimer's Fund, a local nonprofit that funds Alzheimer's research at various universities throughout the country. It's a lot to juggle, but as I'm graduating I really feel like I got the most from my Brandeis experience. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings!
