Steven was born and raised in Vineland, New Jersey. Jewish philanthropy has always been important in his life following in the footsteps of his mother, Phylls Nimoityn Schwartz Gross Z''l, who was a leading fundraiser for Jewish organizations throughout her life and Steven's grandfather, Sam Nimoityn Z''l, a kosher butcher who was instrumental in founding the Lubavitcher Center of Philadelphia.

While attending Rutgers University, Steven met Iris during a summer at Camp Ramah in Ojai, California and transferred to the University of Washington where he completed his degrees in Business Administration and Psychology. Steven and Iris were married in Petach Tikvah, Israel and then settled in the Seattle area.  Steven and Iris celebrated 25 years of marriage this past June.

They have four children. Joshua (2007) who is currently attending graduate school at Tel Aviv University. Jodi (2008) is a senior at the University of Washington. Jamie (2011) just graduated from NYHS and is at Hebrew University in Jerusalem this year. She will attend the University of Washington in the fall of 2012. Jessica is a junior at NYHS.

Steven is the Senior Vice President of Corporate Business Development for Allscripts. Steven was a past Board Member at Herzl Ner Tamid Congregation on Mercer Island.

Iris graduated from the University of Washington and has worked in her family's gift business for many years.  Iris has always been committed to Jewish education and taught Hebrew school at Herzl for many years.  While her kids were at the Jewish Day School (JDS), Iris chaired two JDS auctions. She was instrumental in bringing the auction to NYHS and co-chaired the first two auctions at NYHS in 2006 and 2007. She has been heavily involved in every auction since. Iris has also chaired an auction for the Care Foundation and has been involved in the Herzl 100th Anniversary Celebration, Youth Commission, and Herzl Judaica Shop. Iris is also a current secretary on the NYHS Board and co-chairs the NYHS Development Committee with Jack DeLeon.
