A Message from Rabbi Bernie Fox
This has been a very busy week at NYHS. Last Saturday night, we held our first Homecoming game at SHA as we welcomed alumni back home. Both women's and men's teams delivered wins over Orting. It was wonderful to see alumni and friends cheer on our 613s. The Student Council provided pizza and there was a lot of NYHS spirit. We hope to make this an annual tradition with even more activities planned for our alumni.
On Monday morning, we welcomed alumnus Rabbi Aryeh Young to campus. Rabbi Young graduated from Lander College and received smicha from Beis Medresh L'talmud. Rabbi Young was on campus recruiting for Yeshivat Sha'arei Mevaseret.
On Monday night, our Evening of Talent was a huge success. You will read more about this entertaining night in Milana Davydova's piece by scrolling down. This tradition was first started in 1992 by Bill Hesse, our retired academic dean. Thank you to all the students, alumni and families who participated in this production. Thank you to our drama teacher, Anne Marie Caldwell and to Shirley Fox and Karen Franke for spearheading this event.
The Student Council and Rabbi Margolese created a festive atmosphere on campus this week in celebration of Chanukah. Sufgoniot and other treats were distributed to our students. Karen Franke distributed her annual hot coco gift to students too.
On Wednesday, we welcomed more alumni back to campus for the College Panel. This is a very important program for our current students as they get to hear from alumni with varying perspectives about college, choosing a school, Jewish life on campus, transitioning from high school and much more. Our alumni spoke of how well prepared they were for academic life on campus and gave credit to NYHS teachers for helping to teach them critical skills such as analytical thinking , essay writing and time management. I would like to thank the following alumni for their participation and insight.
- Ari Langman 2010, Lafayette University,Engineering
- Mordechai Treiger 2005, University of Pennsylvania, BA Biology & Environmental Studies, MA Environmental Studies
- Elisheva Goldberg 2006, University of Pennsylvania, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures
- Chelsea Garbell 2008, New York University,
- Ashley Cohen 2011, New York University, Nursing
- Ariella Margolese 1997, Stern College, Major in Psychology and minor in Biology
- Josh Etsekson 2009, Bellevue College, UW transfer
- Nicki Etsekson 2010, Tulane, Public Health
- Tanya Friedland 2010, UW
- Tom Heller 2003, Brandeis University
Our week concluded with a morning of service to our community. Students and faculty spent Thursday morning at Northwest Harvest bagging and sorting food in the food bank.
I would like to congratulate my colleagues, Shoshi Bilavsky, SJCS and Maria Erlitz, JDS for receiving Peje Challenge Grant awards for their schools! Mazal tov!
Enjoy the winter break. Shabbat shalom and Happy Chanukah.

Thank you to all of our wonderful and talented performers, and thank you to everyone who came out and supported the show! Click here for more photos.
College Panel:
On Wednesday afternoon students got the chance to listen to alumni that were invited back to campus for our annual College Panel. This is an opportunity for NYHS students to hear from alumni about their post-high school experiences in college or graduate school. Students also had the opportunity to ask the alumni questions regarding how they felt NYHS prepared them for college, Jewish life on college campus', as well as topics such as time management and organization. The alumni represented a wide variety of schools including Bellevue College, Brandeis, U. Penn, Stern College, NYU, Tulane, Lafayette and UW. Thank you to all the alumni who came and spoke to the students! The College Panel discussion has proved to be very resourceful so far.
Meet Development and Marketing Intern: Tracy Brady
This year, we have an extra set of helping hands for the auction! Tracy Brady just graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in American Cultural Studies. She'll be around campus helping Melissa Rivkin and the Auction Team out with everything that has to do with the auction! "I'm really excited to be helping out here," says Tracy, "it's been a very warm and welcoming environment so far." Tracy also talked about what she'll be doing to help out: "I get to make sure that all the items are coming in, and I enter them into the computer and make sure that everything is going smoothly." We are so excited to have Tracy on campus and help out with the auction!
Sports Recap:
This week was also packed with games for our boys JV basketball team, as well as the men's and women's varsity teams. Saturday night Homecoming games, both women and men's teams won their games against Orting!
Have a restful weekend, a Happy Channukah, and a wonderful Shabbat!

 College Panel 2011
Chelsea Garbell 2008 voted one of the top 15 most influential students at New York University!
| | 15 Most Influential Students of 2011 |
Zelle Rettman 2010 sent this in. Zelle, along with Shoshana Goldberg 2010 and Marina Garkavi 2009, are on the Brandeis Volleyball Team. In an ode to Coach Jed Davis, they recreated the traditional women's basketball team photo for volleyball. NYHS tradition ...perhaps a new Brandeis tradition?
Esther (Cohen)Varon 2007 is graduating from Yeshiva University with a degree in English Literature in January. She plans to pursue a career in publishing. She and her husband live in Brooklyn.

_______________________________________ Check out Benjy Balint's (1999) article in Haaretz Umberto Eco and Treacherous Texts _________________________________________ Note from Rachel Weinstein 2008
Rachel Weinstein 2008 and Zelle Rettman 2010 at Brandeis I'm a senior at Brandeis University this year, so I'll be graduating in May (it's hard to believe it's already been four years since I graduated from Yeshiva!) I majored in Public Health and minored in Business, and am happy to say that I plan to work for a finance company in Boston next year. I've been very involved with Jewish life on campus, both within the Brandeis Orthodox Organization and the Brandeis Chabad student organization. I've also been juggling a full courseload with a job doing marketing and PR work for Cure Alzheimer's Fund, a local nonprofit that funds Alzheimer's research at various universities throughout the country. It's a lot to juggle, but as I'm graduating I really feel like I got the most from my Brandeis experience. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings!
