Kashrut Speaker Rabbi Jenkins Visits NYHS!

by Milana Davydova 2012
This past Tuesday, Northwest Yeshiva High School students got the privilege of listening to Rabbi Jenkins come in and talk to us about Kashrut. Rabbi Jenkins started out by talking about how important Kashrut is in general in Judaism. He then got into specifics such as the laws of Kashrut regarding gum, Gatorade, and Oreos. He emphasized how important it is to understand what goes into food so we can exactly recognize why we can't eat them. Rabbi Jenkins also talked about the Kashrut laws that revolve around eating bugs and provided a practical example with eating berries. He finished his lecture on a humorous note after a student asked him whether or not paper goods could be kosher.
He laughed at the question and noted that companies that place a Kosher symbol on their paper goods are silly. Rabbi Jenkins said: "it is analogous to water that has a Kosher sign. What's the point?" All in all, it is safe to say that students enjoyed the opportunity to learn about Kashrut in a non-classroom environment. Thank you Rabbi Jenkins for coming in and sharing your knowledge with our school!
This week was also packed with games for our boys JV basketball team, as well as the men's and women's varsity teams. Read ahead for Grace Almo's comments and highlights on the game! We hope to see you all this Saturday night at SHA against Orting High School. Women will play at 6:45 PM and men will play at 8:15 PM.
Make sure to mark your calendars for the annual NYHS talent show next Monday night at the JCC. Every year there are various creative, funny, and unique acts at the talent show! This is an event you won't want to miss!
Have a restful weekend, and a wonderful Shabbat!
Shabbat Shalom!

Another Busy Basketball Week
by Grace Almo 2013
Please click here for a complete basketball schedule.
This week, the men's basketball team had three games, and the women's team had two! On Tuesday, all of our teams went out to Kirkland to play against Puget Sound Adventist. The JV men's game started out late because the referees didn't show up. Keith Grate, the boy's coach, stepped up to the plate and was the referee with coach from PSA. Shawn Sobel, Junior, acted in Keith place as if he were the coach. Raffy Naim, our exchange student from Italy, helped lead the JV team to victory. Albert Hanan-freshman made good shots at crucial points in the game. And best of all the men played great defense. They played a great game and won! The women took the court with the right mindset and read to play. Without outstanding defense and persistence, the women succeeded as they played great offense as well. They made great passes, and made open shots. Ilana Greenberg, and Julia Owen, both had a high score of 14 points. Milana Davydov, top scorer of the night had 17 points! After playing hard, the final score was 49-29. On Wednesday night, JV men played against Mt. Rainier Lutheran High. It was a hard fought game, as we were ahead in the beginning. Then in the last three minutes, we were in foul trouble. The other team made their free throws, and we lost in the last three minutes! On Thursday night, the women played against Bishop Blanchet C Team. Last time we played them the majority of our team was missing and we lost a close game. This time we came out with strong defense and riveting offense. Elana Hasson, sophomore, was amazingly fast, took many fast breaks, and scored 10 points. Julia Owen had a great game as she hit many shots from the outside, and posted up inside; she was the highest scorer with 17 points. We won with the final score of 49-27. That same night Men's Varsity played against Eastside prep. In the first and second quarters the game was really close between the teams, with points in the single digits. With fantastic defense the men pulled ahead and kept their lead. David Kintzer, Shuey Straussman, and Tui Cohanim all had 12 points. Tui also had many rebounds. David had great assists, and the men won the game by 30 points! Please join us the Saturday night for "homecoming" as alumni, perspective students, students, and teachers come to watch our games vs. Orting. The Woman's game will be at 6:45 pm, and the Men's game 8:15, in between the games there will be complementary pizza. Tuesday night next week we will be playing vs. Mt. Rainer Lutheran-a league game to finish off the first half of the season. Men's JV will be at 4:30, Women's varsity at 6:00 PM, and Men's Varsity at 7:30 PM.

Rachel Weinstein 2008 and Zelle Rettman 2010 at Brandeis I'm a senior at Brandeis University this year, so I'll be graduating in May (it's hard to believe it's already been four years since I graduated from Yeshiva!) I majored in Public Health and minored in Business, and am happy to say that I plan to work for a finance company in Boston next year. I've been very involved with Jewish life on campus, both within the Brandeis Orthodox Organization and the Brandeis Chabad student organization. I've also been juggling a full courseload with a job doing marketing and PR work for Cure Alzheimer's Fund, a local nonprofit that funds Alzheimer's research at various universities throughout the country. It's a lot to juggle, but as I'm graduating I really feel like I got the most from my Brandeis experience. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future brings!
