Livescribe Smartpen Tip
You've unpacked your Livescribe pens and would like to link each student or teacher with the serial number of their smartpen.

Is there an easy way to do
this?  Definitely!

Open the front cover of any
Livescribe notebook and tap your smartpen on the "Software Version" button.

The 11-letter combination following "PenID" is your pen's serial number.

Formative Assessment That Clicks with Students
Do you have educators in your building or district that haven't used CPS clickers in their classrooms?  Encourage them to read the article published in eSchool News, "Formative assessment that 'clicks' with students."

T
his article paints a clear picture of what clickers look like in the classroom and the benefits that students and teachers alike will reap from their appropriate use.

Engaging Technologies

Greetings!

It's hard to believe that school is already back in session.  I recall as a kid that summer always went too fast, but this year it seemed like we turned around and summer was gone.  With the end of summer comes an exciting new school year.  Now is the perfect time to hit the ground running with your technology completely in place and ready to roll.

We've had a few changes at Engaging Technologies over the summer as we continue to add additional consultants for the region in order to strive towards improved support in your classrooms on a daily basis.  Feel free to contact us if we can be of any help as you kick off the new school year.

Sincerely,

Dustin Frank

Change is in the Air

Fallen off the radar? Missing in action? What term should we use for a long disappearance from your email mailbox such has been the case with our newsletter this summer? To feed your curiosity, no, we weren't off jetsetting around the country or eating bon-bons on the couch all summer and purposely neglecting to write a newsletter (although the jetsetting does sound tempting...).  If not, then what HAVE we been doing?

We've been running a few hands short, so we are building our team and have spent a lot of time this summer laying groundwork for growth in our company.  Engaging Technologies is committed to providing the very best engaging technologies to our Kansas and Nebraska customers, so we've been busy adopting new product lines and getting more hands on deck to provide support and motivation across our states. We are looking forward to the school year ahead.

We appreciate your patience with us and apologize for our multi-month disappearance, but we're back on our monthly schedule now and will continue to bring you software update notices, helpful hints and tips, and special offers through our monthly newsletter.

For a rundown on some of the things, you might have missed this summer...

  • We've hired a new consultant, David LaDay, who will be working with schools  You can read more about David's background HERE.

  • Livescribe released a new smartpen, the Livescribe Echo. Check out its new look and information on how to perform the firmware update for your Livescribe Pulse HERE.

  • Andy Van Schaack, Senior Science Advisor at Livescribe and Professor at Vanderbilt University, released results of a study conducted at Vanderbilt on the ease of accessibility of information using a Livescribe smartpen and an Apple iPod. Read the fascinating results in the abstract and view graphs and pictures in the presentation.
  • A new CPS White Paper, "What the Research Says: Using eInstruction's CPS to Support Effective Instruction," was added to our website.  Click HERE to read the white paper.

Livescribe's Fall Webinar Series Starting Soon

There is no replacement for actual hands-on staff development with new technology.  Check out this video of a hands-on training with the Livescribe Smartpen, and you'll see the energy that is created in an onsite training that seems to be missing in the hushed whispers and long silences of a training webinar.

However, as a precursor to onsite staff development trainings and in an effort to give our customers additional awareness, training and resources, Livescribe is offering a new Fall webinar series.  Two webinars will be held each month - one demo and one training - through December.

Make sure and join us for one of the two webinars that will be held this month! If you are interested in attending this month and are unable to make the date and time work for you, please contact us to see if the webinar can be recorded for you.

Livescribe Use Models in Special Education
In his article,  Livescribe Use Models in Special Education, a followup to his review of the Livescribe Echo Smartpen, Chris Dawson of ZDNetsays,

"The Echo has the potential to level the playing field in many ways, not only for kids with specific disabilities, but for kids with learning styles that don't match an instructional style or who simply need to access and recall information in a non-traditional way."

Chris also hits on the parental component of smartpen use.

Read Chris's complete articleon the use of the Livescribe smartpen in special education and call to schedule a hands-on demo of

eInstruction Partners with SchoolNet

eInstruction has partnered with SchoolNet to provide educators with the power of CPS Pulse combined with SchoolNet Assess.  For educators currently using SchoolNet Assess, this means there's an easier way to obtain student responses. No longer do teachers have to wait for the computer lab or reserve the shared computer cart in order to administer tests and view immediate results from SchoolNet Assess.

SchoolNet Assess tests can now be administered directly from the Assess Proctor Page using eInstruction student response systems.  The SchoolNet solution requires the eInstruction device manager be installed and opened before SchoolNet's Proctor page will display the work-flow options.

You can view SchoolNet's public announcement of the integration HERE.

Classroom Makeover Video Contest is Back Again!

Gather the troops, lay out the plans, and get started creating your music video submission for the 2010 eInstruction Classroom Makeover Video Contest.  A BIG winner in the 6th-8th grade category last year came from our area's very own Joy Schott and her 6th grade students at Burwell, Nebraska, and they won a cornucopia of prizes for their classroom!

Write your song, roll the camera, and submit your video before November 2nd to enter to win an interactive classroom worth up to $75,000!  A panel of judges will select a grand-prize winner from three categories; grades K-5 (4-10 yrs old), grades 6-8 (10-14 yrs old), and grades 9-12 (14-18 yrs old).  View a complete list of contest rules and prize sponsors here.

Let's have another winner from Kansas or Nebraska this year and show them what the Midwest is made of - creative educators that love technology! As a bit of inspiration, take a peek at Burwell's winning video from last year to see what sort of class acts you'll be up against!  See the Burwell video, "It's All Technology!"

Any teacher that can be replaced by a computer, deserves to be.
