Research and SOTO-USA

SOT Graphic

While SOTO-USA has presented SOT or cranial related research at the main chiropractic research conferences for the past 11 years our SOT Research Conference papers are creating a huge base of papers that can be submitted to our various chiropractic research conferences, allied healthcare research conferences, and then to peer reviewed journals. For some authors this is their first time and we hope to build a group of doctors who can feel comfortable with writing for publication and then even helping others. In this way SOT can build an evidence base of literature unrivaled in the chiropractic profession.

This year's research progress started in Las Vegas in October 2009 with our 1st SOT Research Conference where we had 28 paper submissions. These abstracts were submitted to MANTIS, the leading alternative healthcare search engine, and we are anticipating having the 2010 and 2009 conference proceedings published in the Journal of the Vertebral Subluxation Research and Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health.

In November 2009 we presented research on SOT chiropractic at a TMJ Bioengineering Conference in Boulder Colorado. At the Research Agenda Conference or Association of Chiropractic Colleges we had 2 papers presented at this conference in March 2010. From the 2009 SOT Research Conference articles we submitted some of these to the European Chiropractic Union Research Conference and in May 2010 and we had involvement in 4 papers that were presented at this conference.

We had 6 papers presented at the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association's conference October 2010 and also will have 6 papers presented at the World Congress on Low Back and Pelvic Pain in Los Angeles this November 2010. We also submitted approximately 10 papers for this upcoming RAC/ACC conference in 2011. This 2010 SOT Research Conference we had over 30 paper submissions accepted and will use all the papers from the 2009 and this 2010 SOT Research Conferences to submit to the upcoming World Federation Congress Conference this April 2011 in Rio de Janeiro. We are anticipating submitting at least 30 papers to this conference.

What does all this mean?

Research Evidence

The research community and its publications function on a very thin line, which is founded and predicated on the ethics, honesty, and integrity of any writer of research. For this reason it is considered extremely bad form to fabricate data, modify patient history to improve a "story," or attempt to minimize other therapeutic interventions with the thought that this improves the value of their personal intervention. Evidence based chiropractic literature is the bedrock that the chiropractic profession can stand upon. If an author does not come from a place of ethics, honesty, and integrity, our published research is compromised, the research conference or journal is compromised, and our whole evidence base of literature is adversely affected.

1. We at SOTO-USA are consistently building an SOT evidence base.

2. We are showing the chiropractic research and academic community that we are a chiropractic technique that is attempting to investigate itself and build an evidence base = credibility.

3. We are developing doctors who have not had experience in writing for publication to take these first steps = building a group of SOT researchers.

4. One goal is to set the stage for developing papers for submissions to peer review journals and gaining greater cultural authority and credibility.

Research protects the future of SOT and chiropractic. It gives us a statement in the judiciary system with malpractice cases, national and internal scope of practices, such as what is happening in Great Britain, helps us develop a presence in chiropractic college curriculums, and gives us a rational for treatment with insurance companies.

What is happening in Britain?

Great Britain
The GCC (General Chiropractic Council ) is a government regulatory body that exists in Great Britain since chiropractic became a registered profession. A member of the public complained about website content to the GCC. The GCC are required then to investigate and persue if they feel there is a case to answer. The GCC is therefore challenging chiropractors who place on their website statements indicating that they treat children or patients with jaw pain. Doctors in Britain are in legal battles now and may lose their license, be fined, or be sanctioned.

What is this all about?

An anti-chiropractic proponent spoke out against chiropractic and its research in Britain, and this person was legally challenged by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). The BCA won the case but lost it on appeal. (For more information click here.) The GCC later hired a chiropractic research team to write a statement on the status of chiropractic research.

Bronfort and a team of researchers in 2010 published an article in the Journal of Chiropractic and Osteopathy entitled, "Effectiveness of manual therapies: the UK evidence report."

SOTO-USA is here to help chiropractic and SOT doctors nationally and internationally so position statements were written to protect doctors in the UK who have been threatened with fines, sanctions, and loss of license for noting on their website that they treat pediatric patients and patients with jaw pain.

Blum CL. Investigating the ability of chiropractors to advertise on their website an expertise in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders. Sacro Occipital Technique Research Conference: New Orleans, Louisiana. SOTO-USA: Sparta, NC. Oct 28, 2010: 40-8.

The BCA is involved because it is the British chiropractors who have received complaints from the GCC and British chiropracrtors feel that BCA's support in this issue is required. The BCA broker their insurance which does not cover them in this instance (website advertising). Involved also is a link between the website complaints and the BCA's legal action against the journalist Singh.
