ACC-RAC Research Conferences 2010

ACC-RAC 2010 is the combination of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) meeting and scientific/educational conference, which emphasizes educational structure, administration, teaching, and peer reviewed presentations, and the Research Agenda Conference (RAC), which focuses on the development of scientific knowledge, skills, and attitudes through workshop sessions. The combination of the two programs continues to enhance and nurture the natural relationship between chiropractic scholarship and education.

This year while initially we were aware of 4 SOT related papers accepted for the conference, by attending the conference and speaking with the various presenters many more SOT related papers were discovered. Acknowledging these papers allows them to be added to the SOT research evidence base and helps build a foundation for future research.

One general theme that was clearly shared through many presentations is that we need to be careful about our mental image of patients and assuming they look like our anatomy texts. Anatomical research clearly is showing that patients are different from side to side as well as from one another in greater manners than we ever thought before. The anatomy books generalize the human body but we are all as different inside as we are outside.

SOT ACC-RAC Presentations

Jean Thompson, Heidi Bockhold, DC, and Charles Blum, DC

Dr. Blum Thompson JE, Bockhold H, Blum CL. Sacro Occipital Technique: Occipital Fiber Technique on Equine. J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):142.

Integrative health for animals is increasing yet there is limited research specifically identifying the use of chiropractic in the equine and canine. In this case report we utilized a chiropractic technique called occipital fiber analysis and treatment (OFT), which is a method within SOT used to analyze and treat thoracic, lumbar, and sacral segments.

Blum CL. Temporomandibular joint disorders and forward head posture secondary to airway compromise: A case report. J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):121.

Obstructive sleep apnea associated with airway compromise has far-reaching social implications. Forward head posture (FHP) also affects a large aspect of the population, and typically is considered associated with the aging process. Patients with mixed presentations (ascending or descending postural influences) can be best treated utilizing chiropractic and dentistry co-management to improve patient outcomes.

Effects on postural control with a sacroiliac belt and 10 chiropractic treatments on 11 random fibromyalgia subjects: A pilot study

 Provencher S, Unger Jr JF.

Dr. Unger Dr. Unger was at this year's ACC RAC conference and as a prolific SOT researcher, Dr. Unger clearly has many SOT related projects on the horizon. We look forward to the work of Drs. Provencher and Unger in the near future.

"The sacroiliac belt, also known as a pelvic belt helps to reduce hypermobility and limit laxity. Compression has been found to stabilize the sacroiliac (SI) joint. The fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patient has been reported to have generalized joint hypermobility. The Serola sacroiliac belt improved the postural control during eyes-closed testing compared to control but did not make significant postural changes compared to the control with eyes-opened testing."

Alterations of dyspepetic signs and symptoms in patients presenting with gastroesophageal reflux disease following chiropractic treatment

Dal Bello F, Dal Bello Veronica, Raupp JM, Santos LN.

Dr. Dal Bello Dr. Fabio Dal Bello is a phenomenal chiropractic researcher from Brazil who can help to significantly contribute to the SOT research community. His presence at the ACC-RAC conference was a welcome sight and great hope for future SOT research.

This was a pilot study with a sample composed of 10 individuals. High digestive endoscopy exam was performed on all individuals before and after eight sessions of chiropractic treatment. The treatment was a sacro occipital technique-based viscerosomatic technique called chiropractic manipulative reflex technique (CMRT). A gastroesophageal reflux disease symptom's questionnaire was used to evaluate dyspeptic signs and symptoms.

SOT Related Papers at the ACC-RAC

LACC SOT Club Various presentations at this conference had papers related to SOT and are shared in this section. For the full abstracts, click here.

Chapman C, Bakkum B. Chiropractic management of a patient with an anatomic anomaly of the piriformis muscle: A case study. J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):87-8.

"This article is to present a case of an anatomical anomaly of the piriformis muscle in a chiropractic clinic setting utilizing pelvic blocks.

Enix D, Smith D. Variability in the morphology of the articular surface of the sacroiliac joint. J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):91.

Outstanding presentation which discussed anatomical variants between shapes of SI joint from side to side as well as from patient to patient. Novel presentations were shared of how some iliolumbar ligaments appear in some patients to be more muscle than ligamentous.

Pohlman KA, Hondras MA, Haan AG, Long CR. Job analysis of chiropractors with a diplomate in pediatrics. J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):138.

A comprehensive cross-sectional job analysis survey of postgraduate pediatric diplomate programs in chiropractic found that of the techniques most commonly used one was cranial. With SOT and cranial being taught in the ICPA program we expect SOT to shortly become one of the techniques most commonly used.

McElvey SE, Bull P. The chiropractic comanagement of asthma: A clinical research approach. J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):135.

The purpose of the research was to examine the benefits of chiropractic in the individual asthma suffers without a concurrent medical management model. There were a total of 19 participant chiropractors and their "live" practice settings) where the clinical research was conducted; there were four groups involved as research subject asthma participants (in total 142 involved in the clinical trial). One of the four accepted techniques included passive wedge (SOT). The results of this clinical trial indicate that a time-dependent physiological factor may be involved in some of the therapeutic benefit observed in this clinical trial of asthma and chiropractic comanagement.

Sikorski D, Tobias G, Kizhakkeveettil A. The influence of students' participation in curricular and extracurricular learning activities on their choice of chiropractic technique. J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):141.

SCUHS students, like currently practicing doctors of chiropractic, similarly prefer Diversified technique over all others, and they indicate that our core technique curriculum and their experience with chiropractic practitioners are the two greater bases influencing their technique practice choices. Thanks to Dr. David Simmons the SOT Club had the largest attendance of all clubs on campus.

Cooperstein R. The short-leg question in chiropractic: Qualitative clinical research on the significance of the type of "short leg." J Chirop Edu. 2010 24(1):123.

It is necessary to use a mix of physical examination methods (radiological, tape measure methods, block indirect method, and sitting-standing indirect method) to distinguish anatomical from functional short leg to derive appropriate mechanical vectors for sacroiliac interventions. Other physical examination methods may be preferred to leg checking to derive appropriate vectors.

Blum CL, Globe G, Assessing the Need for Dental - Chiropractic TMJ Co-Management: The Development of a Prediction Instrument.

Blum CL, Globe G. Cranio View. Win 2010;18(2):29-41.

The challenge for dentists, planning to treat a patient with TMD, remains a guessing game as they continue unaided in attempting to determine whether or not a patient would prophylactically benefit from chiropractic co-treatment in order to prevent the onset or minimize the effect of musculoskeletal symptoms secondary to dental TMD intervention. The purpose of this paper is to help begin the process of developing an assessment tool for dentists to assist them in determining when a patient might not be able to easily adapt to related postural changes that may occur secondary to dental modifications of occlusion or TMJ balancing.

A starting point is needed and a reasonable attempt has been made to begin the daunting process of developing an instrument that would help inform dentists as to which patients may be likely to become symptomatic to peripheral musculoskeletal regions secondary to occlusion modification.

For outcome assessment form for patients and dentists please request the full form via email at drcblum@aol.com. For full abstract, click here.
