Welcome to Living Your Intention!

I learned the love of gardening from my Mother. She delighted in flowers, their smells, and planting them. Her favorites were irises, pansies and roses.
After I was married and we bought our first home, I was eager to begin gardening. With thoughts of starting my own garden, I was excited to learn about the flowers and shrubs Mom grew and duplicate them. Imagine my surprise to learn most of what I loved while growing up in West Texas would not survive our Minnesota winters! It was my introduction to growing zones!
My gardening education was launched; I began to learn the differences between annuals, bi-annuals and perennials and which plants prefer sun and which prefer shade. Big red geraniums were the "standard" for pots at that time so I had the ubiquitous "pole geraniums" in pots by my front door. Impatiens filled the shady areas. Not too exciting - but they provided instant gratification while I was learning.
I ordered the Time Life book series on gardening: bulbs, annuals and perennials. I loved the photos, the descriptions and the detailed care instructions. They were my guides for nearly 20 years.
And all through this learning curve, Mother and I would share gardening stories; while some were frustrating at the time, they were very funny in the telling. There was the time Mom called to tell me our family beagle, Snibbles, had pulled up every single one of her newly planted annuals when she went into the house for a glass of water. I embarrassingly shared how one fall I planted all my bulbs upside down!
It was fun to have Mom visit and show off how my gardens were progressing and, of course, I loved going back home to appreciate the flowers I grew up with. I usually visited in the spring and always waiting for me in my bedroom was a vase of honeysuckle and sweet peas. The fragrance was divine and that scent remains a precious childhood memory. Mom wasn't able to garden for the past seven years and while in the past two years she had lost her ability to talk with me about gardening, she never lost her love of flowers. Hinda

Remembrance and the Scents of Spring
Spring's fragrances came early this year. I honestly don't recall ever seeing my garden beginning to bloom the first of April. Typically, it is under several feet of snow. I was always envious when Mom, living in Texas, told me her jonquils were blooming and she had filled her pots with pansies - in February and March - the months our Minnesota gardens are typically buried under several feet of snow! But this year has been different. Coming sooner, spring has provided early blooming and the gorgeous scents of lilacs, lilies of the valley and honeysuckle.
When I first began gardening many years ago, I was unaware I was following an ancient pleasure. The garden was originally only for nobility and designed for private displays of status. Thankfully, we common folk are able to enjoy gardens now, as well!
I was also unaware when I started gardening of Feng Shui, and its powerful connection with nature. At the time, and since, I know when I am gardening, I am satisfying an inherent need to connect with the earth, which I suspect is true for anyone who gardens.
"My only desire is an intimate infusion with nature, and the only fate I wish is to have worked and lived in harmony with her laws."
Claude Monet
My intention then, as it remains today, was to create beauty by filling our outdoor spaces with color, texture, shape and scent. I also wanted to create garden views from every window of our home. What a glorious way to attract a limitless supply of positive and beautiful Chi on your property and into your home!
As time has gone on, gardening has taken on yet another meaning - that of remembrance. When Tom's Mother, Jeanne, passed several years ago, we planted a lilac bush, her favorite flower, in her honor. When it blooms, it brings her memory especially close. The same is true for me when roses bloom. They were a favorite of both my parents. And, this year, a pot of pansies is sure to heighten my sense of my Mom's presence.
As we approach Memorial Day, a day designated to honor, commemorate and remember the men and women who died while serving in our armed forces, I am reminded that Memorial Day has also become an occasion for more general expressions of memory of deceased relatives, whether they served in the military or not.
While it may not always be possible to visit the burial site of our loved ones, it is possible to create our own Memorial Garden - a personal garden intended to remember those relatives and dear friends who brought us love, happiness and joy and taught us our greatest lessons! I am also aware, both from my own personal experiences and those of others, it is important to take into consideration our departed furry family pets who blessed us with their gentle spirits, brought us laughter with their funny antics and showed us what unconditional love is all about.
A large space isn't required to create a living memorial. A tree can be planted in their memory. Placing your loved one's favorite flowers or birth flower in a deck pot or window box will suffice beautifully. Adding a bench in your garden offers an opportunity to sit and reflect on special memories of departed loved ones.
Gardening is about mindfulness. To create your own Memorial Garden here are some additional suggestions that incorporate Feng Shui principles for creating sacred spaces:
* When possible, use shrubs, trees or vines to create a private and protected site.
* A trellis, shrubs, beautiful stones or statuary can be used to create an entrance.
* Creating a path can serve as a metaphor for the journey through the grieving process and a renewed sense of peace.
* A wind chime, tree, or prayer flags hung in a tree will call us to look upward, reminding us of the connection between Heaven and Earth.
* Rocks or stones add stability and permanence for lasting memories.
* A water feature, such as a fountain or birdbath, can serve as a metaphor for gently washing away sorrow; the sounds of a fountain can also be very soothing and comforting.
* A statue, piece of art or other items that represent the person or one of their interests adds a meaningful focal point.
"All my hurts, my garden spade can heal."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
In loving memory of my Mother, Dorothy Kahn, and dedicated to all of my dear readers who have lost loved ones, human or furry.

Intention
The purpose of this newsletter is two-fold: to share ways to incorporate the art of Feng Shui in daily life and to share travel experiences and opportunities you can access.
Each of these, in its own way, can
support mindfulness and intentionality
as we navigate life's journey.
I hope you encounter a new idea, a new resource or a new viewpoint. Perhaps some small insight will answer an unspoken question, provide a helpful tip, motivate or inspire you,
or simply give you a moment to escape from the day's demands.
