Welcome to Living Your Intention!
Romance is in the air, it must be February! The stores are filled with displays of heart-shaped everything in anticipation of Valentine's Day, February 14th. The history of Valentine's Day is somewhat elusive and complex and many legends surround its origins: Legends of St. Valentine's Day. The most popular theory dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 AD. Claudius believed single men made better soldiers so he refused to allow them to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter signing it, "From your Valentine." Today, Valentine's Day is an opportunity to demonstrate - usually with flowers or candy - devotion to our romantic partner. When I became single again, this day was an "in your face" reminder that I was no longer part of a couple. I wanted only to ignore it. However, as I began to incorporate the principles of Feng Shui in my life, I gained a new perspective on this holiday. Feng Shui uses an energy template to analyze the layout of any space you occupy. This template is called the Bagua (which means having eight sides). The Bagua is used to determine how the different areas of any space you occupy connect with specific aspects of your life. These nine life areas are: Career, Knowledge, Family, Prosperity, Fame and Reputation, Partnership (Relationships and Love), Children and Creativity, Helpful People and Health. Having this information connects you more intimately to the energy of your space and provides valuable insight into how that energy might be blocking or supporting your progress in life. Valentine's Day focuses on love, as does the Partnership area of your space, which is located in the upper right hand area of your home when looking in from your front door. That area might include a bedroom, a study, your kitchen, a hallway or part of your garage. Regardless, it represents partnering with a life partner, partnering with a higher source and partnering with yourself. Partnering with yourself? It means taking time to know and accept who you are, taking care of yourself and being comfortable being with just you. So, I began to treat myself with care on this special Love Day. I would plan a lovely evening that included champagne and fresh flowers. I would light candles, take a long, luxurious bath, and eat favorite foods, including chocolate, of course. In this way, I was reinforcing how I wanted to be treated in a relationship. February 14th became an opportunity to partner with myself. And then, after many years, I found myself in a love relationship. Friends have asked me to write about how Feng Shui and the power of intention were used to manifest this profound change in my life. The following is that story. Hinda

Creating Space for Love, Part 1
In May of 2006, Tom and I were married in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet, surrounded by loving friends and colleagues. Tom and I were traveling with Carole and Tom Hyder, who were leading a group including ourselves and 19 others on a 14-day Feng Shui-focused trip into China and Tibet. Little could I have imagined that events set in motion three years prior would culminate in this spontaneous and beautiful wedding ceremony.
My story begins in the summer of 2003. Suddenly, I was experiencing unusual physical symptoms, best described as bouts of fatigue in my extremities. When I was up and moving around, I was fine but once I lay down, it took tremendous effort to get back up. While my head and neck didn't feel heavy, my arms and legs felt like lead. I had to literally force myself up. Once up, I was able to move around easily and I otherwise felt fine! When these symptoms persisted beyond a week, I made an appointment to see my doctor.
In the meantime, I was out one evening having dinner with a dear Feng Shui friend who posed a question to me out of the blue: "Don't you think it's time you call in a partner?" The question took me aback! I had been happily single for 13 years. I had a satisfying career, a Feng Shui practice I loved, a wonderful family and terrific group of friends. I was proud of my accomplishments and content with my life.
Because this friend is very intuitive and since her question was so startling, I couldn't ignore it. I remember casually telling her I would give it some thought. A month later, while having dinner with other mutual Feng Shui friends, I shared the question I had been asked. Their immediate response was one of excitement. They thought it was a fabulous idea and were eager to assist when I was ready! I promised I would give it serious thought and let them know my answer.
"Calling in" is a term used in Feng Shui that refers to a two-step process of setting an intention. The first step is making a thoughtful and clear decision about what you want to change or have happen in a certain area of your life. Once you attain the clarity you then very intentionally ask for it as if in silent prayer. The second step involves using the energy of your environment to support that intention. That is done by engaging an object in your physical environment that is meaningful to you (a special shell, rock, vase, crystal, and so on), to "hold" the intention on your behalf. It serves as a powerful energetic reminder for what you have set in motion and allows the energy of your space to work on your behalf. It's another type of partnership - a partnership with your space.
It is easy to entertain the romantic notion of calling in a partner; however, serious consideration must be given to this potentially life-changing action. A basic question has to be considered: Do I want to create room for a partner? To get there, a series of questions must be answered.
Was I willing to make the time to devote to a relationship? How easily could I imagine a partner fitting into my community of friends and family? How comfortable would another person feel in my home?
Was I willing to make room for another person in my closet, drawers, bathroom and kitchen? Was my bed big enough for two? Was there space at my breakfast room table to share a meal? While these are practical questions, they are also emotional ones.
If you can see yourself making room physically for another person in your life, then you will be able to make room for them emotionally as well.
While I was busy asking myself those questions to gain clarity on the subject of partnership, I continued to go through tests for my ongoing physical symptoms. Thankfully, the results were coming in negative for a variety of possible ailments, but the symptoms persisted.
In the meantime, I had decided to see an acupuncturist but did not wish to return to the one I had seen several years prior. By now I also knew other acupuncturists, all very professional and well qualified. The strange thing was, however, I also knew I didn't wish to go to any of them either. I had no good reason, just an inner voice telling me, "No, not that one." I was learning to listen to that seemingly irrational voice. So I waited while continuing to participate in the variety of tests my primary physician offered.
By late summer I needed to register for a continuing education workshop in my field. When I learned I had to give up a precious Saturday to attend, I was resentful. However, as I read the workshop choices, I came across one entitled Acupuncture and Stroke. I was excited and intrigued, my resentment dissolved and I eagerly signed up!
When I walked into the workshop, I saw a lovely woman standing in the front of the room. She was the presenter. I went up and introduced myself. I immediately knew I had found the acupuncturist I had been waiting for.

Intention
The purpose of this newsletter is two-fold: to share ways to incorporate the art of Feng Shui in daily life and to share travel experiences. Each of these, in its own way, can support mindfulness and intentionality as we navigate our life's journey.
I hope that you might encounter a new idea, a new resource or a new viewpoint. Perhaps some small insight will answer an unspoken question, provide a helpful tip, motivate or inspire you or simply give you a moment to escape from the demands of your day.

Thoughts on Love
|
Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.
When you say, "I love you," mean it.
When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.
Believe in love at first sight.
Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and responsibility for all your actions.
