Dear friends,
Winter is a busy time of year for Robert with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, NatureWorks and Masterworks in Miniature shows and a gallery appearance at Lovetts Gallery. Robert (or his work) will be traveling across the country in February, from Charleston, South Carolina, to Mentor, Ohio, to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
This past fall, Robert was in Easton, Maryland, for the Waterfowl Festival and just recently wrapped up the "Wildlife Art Revealed" exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

Newsletter extras!
This issue's printable PDF and wallpaper ...
It was about this time last year when we made the decision to replace our traditional paper mailings with electronic communications. In the past year, many of you have remarked how much you enjoyed receiving those little note cards in the mail, and on many occasions when Robert has been visiting his collectors, he's spotted those very note cards on the fridge or tacked up somewhere. This has been very humbling. In response, in the last e-mail we included a link to a PDF of Robert's work for you to download and print and also an image for your computer wallpaper. We received an overwhelming response and we will try to include a new image with each newsletter. Thanks once again for everyone's enthusiasm over Robert's work.

Fall 2009 A full season
In September, the "Wildlife Art Revealed" exhibit opened at the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville, Virginia. This was a momentous museum exhibit for Robert, who had the good fortune to join artists Julie Bender, Paul Rhymer and Roger Martin in this exciting exhibit that paired original artwork with informative displays on each of the artist's process for creating their art.
November found Robert traveling to Easton, Maryland, for the 39th Annual Waterfowl Festival. The Waterfowl Festival is dedicated to wildlife conservation, the promotion of wildlife art and the celebration of life on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In addition to world-class art, the Waterfowl Festival offers diverse exhibits and events in venues throughout the town of Easton. In its 38 years, the festival has become a leader in the conservation of waterfowl and wildlife habitat. More than $4.8 million has been raised and donated to projects throughout the Atlantic Flyway, and in particular the Chesapeake Bay.
The Almost Miniature exhibit wrapped up in January. Robert's painting "Three Gentlemen (Roosters)" was one of many small works in this year's show at the Francesca Anderson Fine Art Gallery in Lexington, Massachusetts. |
Winter 2010
What's coming up
February is the busiest time of year for Robert. He'll be traveling to Charleston, South Carolina, for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition and then to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the NatureWorks Art Show and Sale. While in Tulsa, Robert will be appearing at Lovetts Gallery for a live painting demonstration. In addition, for the third year Robert was asked to submit an original painting to the Masterworks in Miniature exhibit at Gallery One in Mentor, Ohio.
Southeastern Wildlife Exposition
Charleston, South Carolina
February 12-14, 2010
The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is the largest event of its kind in the nation, attracting more than 35,000 attendees. In addition to world-class original art, SEWE offers diverse exhibits and events in venues throughout downtown Charleston. The show specifically promotes the conservation and preservation of nature and wildlife.
Robert looks forward to this show every year. "I love visiting Charleston. It's a beautiful city and full of so many things to paint," he says. Robert usually gets up early and goes out to take photo references of the local birds and animals and the Southern architecture. Last year, while out with friend and fellow artist Dustin Van Wechel, he stumbled (almost literally) onto an alligator. "It was extremely frightening at first," Robert says, "but it turned into a great reference-gathering trip"

"Runaway (Goose and Goslings)"
Oil, 18 x 8
This painting was just finished. The reference for this painting came from one of Robert's many trips into Richmond city, in particular, Shockoe Bottom, locally called the "Bottom." In the Bottom is the Richmond Canal Walk, where you can tour the historic canal channels by boat. During my last trip, I took a ride on one of the boats so I was able to get reference from down inside the canal. While getting reference of the canal walls (this one extending at least 8 feet above the water), a mother goose and her goslings came around the corner, PERFECT! I couldn't have asked for a better painting!
"Reflected Blue (Great Blue Heron)"
Oil, 11 x 6
"Reflected Blue (Great Blue Heron)" is a result of one of Robert's many walks on the Swift Creek reservoir just outside of Richmond, Virginia. As always, Robert has his camera with him and was lucky enough to catch the heron in the perfectly still water, creating this fantastic mirror image.
"Paused (Crow)"
Oil, 5 x 9
You can see this painting from start to finish on
