Did Holiday Feasting Give You a Grumpy Pouch?
Try Soothing
Fennel & Celery Soup

Do you have a grumpy pouch? Here is a healing soup to ease your pouchy woes. Use it on any day of the 5 Day Pouch test or anytime else to pamper your gastric pouch.

Fennel and Celery are both good digestive healers. Fennel is known to soothe an inflamed digestive lining and celery helps to support liver function. Raw vegetables can irritate an inflamed digestive system so this well-cooked soup soothes the digestive system and helps cleanse your body of toxins.

Ingredients:
1 large brown onion, chopped
2 bulbs of root fennel, peeled and chopped
1 head (8-10 ribs) of celery, chopped
2 cups vegetable stock, reduced-sodium
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
more parsley for garnish

Directions:
Place all of the ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce to a low boil and cook for 10 minutes. Further reduce temperature to a slow simmer and cook an additional 30 minutes. Remove from heat and allow cooling. Remove and discard the bay leaves. Using a blender or immersion blender puree the soup until smooth. Return to saucepan and gently reheat. Enjoy one cup of soup garnished with parsley. This soup keeps well refrigerated and served gently reheated.

Food for Thought
 Comfort Eating is Okay IF....
From the moment we were born food has provided comfort to us. It is natural that we are compelled to reach for food when seeking comfort. This is not a character flaw: this is the human condition. Weight loss surgery does not take away our intrinsic human need to be comforted with nourishment. WLS gives us a second chance to rethink the type of nourishment we reach for when seeking comfort. Gone are the days of empty calorie comfort snacking. We are better served with a warm cup of soup or a delicious meal of perfectly-cooked protein and vegetables. Sweet berries or fruit provide far more nourishment and comfort than convenience store snacks and they come without the post-noshing guilt. So I say, indeed, comfort yourself with nourishment: it is human nature. Just use wisdom in selecting your comfort foods.

When Comfort Eating Leads to Obesity Relapse

Pot of Soup
Never underestimate the comforting power of a healthy well-made soup: it is your best weapon in the battle against the Carb Monster. Use any fresh vegetables that you like. Saute them in a scant amount of olive oil which will help your body absorb the nutrients and then simmer in reduced sodium chicken, beef, or vegetable broth until nice and tender Serve yourself some delicious goodness one cup at a time and feel the love.

Focus:

Practice mental presence during the 5 Day Pouch Test. Be mindful of all you eat, how you move your body and observe your energy levels and patterns. Be completely aware of yourself and identify the things that are working and helping you to feel refreshed and alive. Use the 5 Day Pouch Test journal to record your experience and focus on learning about yourself. Awareness is not selfish, it is part of the process of understanding so that we may improve our health and wellness. Carry this focus forward to Day 6 and continue to treat your body in a kind and healthy manner and avoid stepping back into the the self-loathing and unhealthy behavior that brought you here.

 Happy 2012 Neighbors!

Happy 2012 Neighbors! This is your year to shine and I'm going to help you with the 5 Day Pouch Test and our continued community support in the Neighborhood. In the Neighborhood (see note) this year we have already talked a lot about self-improvement and renewed personal commitment as we begin the New Year with resolve. After the buzz of the New Year dulls it may become easy to find reasons not to measure up to our resolution expectations. As we have heard lately, life gets in the way. But I suggest this year we don't resolve to live a better life: instead I suggest we expect to live a better life.

In 1980 the US Hockey Team, against all odds, beat the Russians to win the Olympic gold medal. It was a long-shot victory at best and when team captain Mike Eruzione was asked why they won he said the pundits had underestimated the team's intangible assets. He said, "Our abilities deserved seventh place. They were wrong because of the 'intangibles.' How can you measure desire, commitment, faith, passion, and courage? They weren't able to measure those 'whys.' There weren't able to see how much heart we had, how much pride we had, why we were so close as a team, and why we were willing to pay the price that enabled us to win. You ask why we won. We asked ourselves, 'why not?'"

I believe that as a community we can pool our desire, commitment, faith, passion, and courage to become a gold medal winning team of Neighbors who are doing our very best to thrive in a world where it is much easier to stay unhealthy. The power of collective strength is unstoppable. As is the course of human nature there will be times some are thriving while others are struggling: but together we can strengthen one another and we can meet our best expectations in 2012.

In this course of his studies on evolution Charles Darwin discovered that in sea turtles it is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor is it the most intelligent of the species that survive. The survivors are those most responsive to change. As weight loss surgery patients we have affected a major change on our bodies, our species. I consider that we caused a voluntary accelerateBe Kind Posteration of evolution and because of this we must embrace and accept change with great enthusiasm. We don't have to be the strongest or most intelligent, we just simply have to move forward accepting this change and find what works.

Our surgeons have skillfully changed us physically. But the more difficult change comes from within. Within our minds, our hearts, and yes, our spiritual beings. When we embrace inner change our physical being will follow.

As part of embracing change I ask you to be kind to yourself. Be kind to yourself. This is a really important part of the 5 Day Pouch Test and LivingAfterWLS. Often people recovering from morbid obesity (myself included) put ourselves last on the priority list. Anything else feels selfish and we are giving people, right? Wrong. We cannot give fully of ourselves until we are healthy inside and out. And remember, you are never alone in this journey. Come see us in the Neighborhood.

Best Wishes and Remember: You Can Do This!

One way to get the most enjoyment out of the summer season, and any season, is to take a few moments to review the basics that keep us on track with weight loss surgery. Nothing will bring the good times to a halt faster than feeling discouraged or disappointed with our surgery and our health.

  (3/1/2011)
When we disjoint our moral character, our spiritual self, and our self-worth from the medical condition we are fighting with weight loss surgery we are able to pragmatically approach the control and treatment of the condition without making it personal. We are not bad people if we relapse with weight gain and we are not bad for having this illness in the first place.

One of the first places we go off track after weight loss surgery is forgetting to follow the liquid restrictions. Some centers call them water rules. In short, the liquid restrictions mean to cease drinking beverages 30 minutes before meals and refrain from drinking beverages with meals and for 30 minutes thereafter. Read the newsletter to learn more.

course that covered the nitty-gritty of our weight loss surgery four rules. Our readers responded with excitement: it seems no matter where we are in the journey a little reminding goes a long way in keeping us on track. By popular demand we will address the rules again in January - February 2012. Until then here are quick links to our 2011 Refresher Course:
