Your voice, your words, your actions...made a difference!

Last month we sent out our "5 for the Arts" newsletter regarding the possibility of the LAC being at risk of losing our city funding and asking you to support us with letters to Mayor Chris Beutler.  The response was overwhelming!

5 For the ArtsWe were happily bombarded with letters of support for the LAC and for the arts in Lincoln.

Mayor Beutler was listening, too.  At the 2009 Mayor's Arts Awards, the Mayor assured the nearly 300 in attendance that he would not be cutting our budget.  He even jokingly indicated that it would be okay for the flood of LAC support letters to his office to come to a halt!

Thank you for your time, passion and commitment.  Your letters gave us exactly what we needed at just the right time... a strong voice of support and the hope of a bright future.

Multicultural Arts Initiative

Daniel KuberttDaniel Kubert was at Elliot Elementary School June 23,25, and 26 conducting the last artisan program through the Multicultural Arts Initiative Project.  Daniel was cast in Broadway reproductions and original theater pieces which gave him a reverence for the development of contemporary dance forms via participation in classical forms.  The children learned how to make a story about their heritage through movements of their body.  Each student would say their story in their native language along with their dance.  Daniel really enjoyed teaching the kids and they began to realize how to express a story through movements.

In 1991 Daniel was hired by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company as a dancer and was with the company for over ten years.  As a result of the brisk global tour schedule and community outreach programs, it allowed him to teach all levels of classes around the world.  Take a look at other wonderful artisans in Lincoln on the Multicultural Arts Initiative page.

Through art education, the Lincoln Arts Council hopes to help educate the community about the wonderful multicultural artisans in Lincoln.  The project has already profiled thirty multicultural artists from the community and can be seen on the Multicultural Arts Initiative page at Lincoln Arts Council's website www.artscene.org.  This project is grant funded by the Nebraska Arts Council and Wells Fargo Bank in Lincoln.

The Nebraska Repertory TheatreThe Nebraska Repertory Theatre, the professional wing of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, opens its season July 9 with THE DRAWER BOY and continues in rotating repertory with VINO VERITAS opening July 15 and ANATOMY OF GRAY opening July 22. The season closes Sunday, August 9.

The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey - A stage illusion washes away old lies.  Disabled by memory loss, Angus (George Hansen) gets by with a little help from his bachelor farmer friend, Morgan (Richard Marlatt). When an actor (Christian Stokes) shows up to write a play about farming, they see their lives on the stage. Redemptive and funny, Drawer Boy is a reminder of the healing power of art.

Vino Veritas by David MacGregor - A single sip of truth spices up two marriages.  Lauren (Melissa Lewis) gets a bottle of wine on her trip to Peru with her husband (Ian Borden) that promises to add gusto to Halloween cocktails with the neighbors (Sasha Dobson and Ryan Kathman). This is a wild concoction: a full shot of comedy zinging with zesty truths.

Anatomy of Gray by Jim Leonard, Jr. - A summer storm answers a prayer with an extraordinary twist.  A fifteen year-old girl, grieving her dead father, wishes up a tempest and the mysterious balloonist who blows in brings newfangled ideas to mythical Gray, Indiana in the 1800s. Change spins through this isolated little community, shaking everyone with laughter, suspicion, wistful yearning, love, and hope.  More...
