Parents Night & Fall Dinner:
Behind the Scenes

Parents Night & Fall Dinner is tonight! Please join us for classroom presentations, a chance to speak with specials teachers, and a presentation by Head of School Carol Maoz.  Click here for schedules.

There will also be a catered dinner from L'Orcio, voted Best Italian Restaurant in New Haven, and a homemade dessert buffet.

L'Orcio owners (and Foote parents) Francesco d'Amuri and Alison De Renzi have been busy prepping for the feast and sent some behind the scenes photos. What does it take to make a meal for the entire Foote community? Francesco and Alison shared some fun facts:
  • 45 pounds of ground beef
  • 80 pounds of chicken breast
  • 500 baby eggplants
  • 18 pounds of Pecorino Romano cheese

Click here to view tonight's menu.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Foote Network Issues

The Foote computer network has been experiencing some technical problems over the past two weeks. It has affected email, teacher blogs, photo sharing and Google docs.

We are asking for your patience and understanding as we work through these hiccups and move toward a new network solution in the next few days that will enable better communication and photo sharing from your children's teachers.

Thank you for bearing with us.

Foote Alum Wins MacArthur 'Genius Grant'
Big news for Foote School!

Labor organizer and Foote alum Ai-jen Poo '89 was named a 2014 MacArthur Foundation Fellow on Sept. 17 for her groundbreaking work in organizing domestic workers. As executive director of the National Alliance for Domestic Workers, she has worked tirelessly to improve working conditions for the nation's 1-2 million housekeepers, nannies and caregivers.

Foote was lucky to have Ai-jen as our graduation speaker in 2013, at which she spoke movingly to students and families about the role that Foote played in her career path, in overcoming fear and in her search for truth. Click here to read the speech.
Congratulations to Ai-jen from the entire Foote community!

Rewards Programs to Support Foote
Stop & Shop Card Registration
It is time to register your Stop & Shop card to earn A+ School Rewards for Foote. Participation costs you nothing; it won't affect gas points, and your purchases are not seen by Foote. Last year the PTC earned over $3,000 through this program - money that went to field trips, summer reading books, and the beautiful new Lower School playground. Please take 30 seconds to make sure your card is signed up by clicking here. Look for the red box labeled "for customers." You can select The Foote School from the list of New Haven schools (alphabetized under "T" for "The Foote School"), or use our school ID number which is 08832. Every card helps, so please encourage family members to register their cards, too. Even Stop & Shop shoppers in other states can support Foote. Questions? Email the PTC's Stop & Shop Coordinator, Vicki Murphy, a vgmurphy1848@comcast.net. Thank you in advance for your support!

Earn Money for Foote at Target
If you have a Target credit card, you can register it with Target's Take Charge of Education program and Target will donate 1 percent of your purchases to Foote. This is win-win: you get 5 percent off your purchases by using the Target Card, and Foote gets Target's donation.  Click here to find out more.

STEM Marshmallow Challenge

Third graders recently took part in the STEM Marshmallow challenge. Devised by designer Peter Skillman and based on a TED Talk, the exercise challenges pairs of students to build a freestanding structure with a marshmallow on top using only 20 sticks of spaghetti, a yard of string and masking tape - in 18 minutes or less!  Julianne Ross-Kleinmann, the Lower School Technology Coordinator, says the lesson teaches kids about engineering, design and how to work collaboratively.

Check out these great videos Julianne made of the classes:

Fall Family Fun Day

Thanks to everyone who came out for Fall Family Fun Day this past Sunday (Sept. 14). We had perfect fall weather, great food (including parents' homemade side dishes and desserts), and a great time with the bounce house, arts and crafts table and the playground. Find more photos on our Facebook page.
