UPDATE: Mixed Age Group Review

Dear Parents,

During the course of this past year, the Mixed Age Group structure has been under review. A team of MAG teachers, specialists and I have been studying ways to enhance the children's experience in Grades 1 and 2 in response to parent and faculty feedback.

The model we have decided to implement for Grades 1 and 2 preserves those elements of MAG we value most (collaboration, a two-year relationship with teachers, the importance of play, project-based learning and opportunities for leadership) while enhancing our program by more carefully meeting our students' developmental, social and cognitive needs. Most importantly, this approach will stay true to Foote School's mission and philosophy.

The new model will be structured so that students move through the first and second grade years together, with the same cohort of children and the same teacher. There will be distinct classrooms and curriculum objectives for each grade level; teachers will remain with the children for the two years, and they will use the same classroom. However, each building will contain one first grade class and one second grade class, enabling continued mixed age collaboration.

We believe these changes will further enhance the children's experience at Foote by providing differentiated instruction, continuity, curricular clarity, and a richer social experience for children.

The new model will be in place for the 2015-16 school year.

If you are currently a parent of a Kindergarten or first grade child, you will be receiving an invitation to a presentation and discussion with more detail about these changes.

If you have questions or feedback, please be sure to share them with me or Head of School Carol Maoz.

Best,

Beth Mello

Head of Lower School

Opening Assembly

This year's opening assembly in the Hosley Gymnasium introduced the Foote community to our new Chinese guest teacher, Li Hong, and our newest students, the Kindergartners (Foote Class of 2024). Ninth graders hosted the assembly and presented entertaining skits about the values of Falco's PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dependability and Excellence) and how children can exemplify those values in class and in everyday life. For the assembly finale, ninth graders presented stuffed Falco birds to the Kindergartners. Find more photos on our Facebook page.

Sixth Graders Spin the Globe

On the first day of school, sixth graders pick a country to study for their geography unit by spinning a big globe and pointing their finger randomly. They spend the next seven months researching the country in depth - its history, government, culture, music and art - and present what they've learned at the annual  Sixth Grade Festival of the World in April.

How I Spent Summer Vacation: Mike Golschneider

To kick off the new school year, Foote faculty talk with Parent E-News about how their summers reflected the first part of the school motto, "Gladly will I learn and gladly teach."

For the third and final week, Art Associate Mike Golschneider talks about the 10 days he spent in Nicaragua building clean water systems for families and a local elementary school.

Foote's Memorial to Sept. 11

Foote joins the world in remembering the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. A cenotaph at the heart of campus - with reflective poems written by students from the class of 2002 - is our enduring tribute.

Read the student poems on our Facebook page.
From the Faculty Blogs

Sue Delaney posted a photo gallery of her MAG class engaged in creative math activities.

Cara Hames' MAG class read a book about brains that teaches how everyone is smart in their own way. Then students illustrated their "brain at its best." (pictured)

Third graders in Amanda Diffley's class worked collaboratively to explore friendship through the characters in their summer reading book, Because of Winn Dixie.
