Getting to Know... Kim Birge-Liberman

Part of a series of short interviews with Foote faculty and staff.

Kim Birge-Liberman
Middle School Science Teacher
Years at Foote: 1
Lives in: North Haven

YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND IN MARINE BIOLOGY. WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN THAT?
I told my parents at age 5 I wanted to be a marine biologist, and I never changed my mind. They were really supportive and wonderful. My dad helped me get my SCUBA diving license at age 12.

WHAT'S THE COOLEST ADVENTURE YOU'VE HAD ON THE OCEAN?
I swam with hammerhead sharks once, on a semester abroad in South Caicos. My friends jumped in and they were like shark! I totally thought they were kidding and I jumped in and they were right. It was a pregnant female.

WERE YOU SCARED?
A bunch of crazy marine biologists? No, we swam after her!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT TEACHING AT FOOTE?
The diversity. I love that we have students who speak so many different languages at home, students that play at pretty elite levels of sports, students that come from really diverse backgrounds.

WHAT'S ON YOUR IPOD?
Dave Matthews, Paul Simon, Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, Jack Johnson, Beatles.

PEPE'S, SALLY'S OR MODERN?
Pepe's. In Sally's defense, though, we haven't tried it yet.
Alum Returns to Foote to Talk About Helping Haitian School Children

Students learned about a school experience quite different from their own on Wednesday. Foote alum Ted Crosby '59 and his wife, Becky, talked with students about their experience helping poor Haitian children get an education through their Crosby Fund for Haitian Education. In rural Haiti,  children walk up to four miles to school, barefoot so their shoes (which are required for school) will last longer. Classrooms are ramshackle, stiflingly hot structures, often with no electricity, and water fountains are modified plastic buckets. Most Haitian children don't attend school at all, because they can't afford the modest cost of tuition, uniforms and books. "More than half of kids your age don't go to school," Becky told students. "I hope you see how lucky you are to go to school." The Crosby Fund is working to disrupt Haiti's cycle of poverty by granting scholarships to more than 300 gifted school children a year. To date, Crosby Fund graduates have gone on to become doctors, teachers and other professions. You can read more about Ted and Becky's work in the forthcoming issue of Foote Prints magazine.
Listening to Africa's Song

Mixed Age Group students are studying Africa and last week experienced the continent's musical diversity with a live performance from a Yale singing group. The a cappella group, Asempa(!), performed a range of African songs in beautiful harmonies before wide-eyed MAG students in the Sandine Theater. Yale's first and only African singing group, Asempa(!) draws from the rich ethnic and musical backgrounds of its members and aims to promote African culture through music. The word "Asempa" comes from the Akan language of Ghana and literally means "good things, good events: good stuff." Click the still frame below to watch a video clip from the performance.
