Summer Theater Production: The Music Man
This just in: The Summer Theater production for 2014 will be the hit musical The Music Man. Here's how Music Theatre International describes the production:

"An affectionate paean to Smalltown, U.S.A. of a bygone era, Meredith Willson's The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he vows to organize - this despite the fact he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall."

The Summer Theater Program is open to students entering grades 6 and up. Click here for more information, and click here to download the 2014 Foote Summer brochure and enrollment form.
Jump Rope For Heart Fundraiser

As a culmination of our expanded jump rope unit this spring, Foote is taking part once again in the national fitness project called Jump Rope for Heart. It is a special event where students, parents and teachers collect donations for their time spent jumping rope for the American Heart Association. If you wish to donate, your gift should be in the form of cash or check payable to the American Heart Association. The money raised goes toward research and education for the number one killer in America, heart disease.

There will be two separate Jump Rope for Heart Events:

  • Wednesday, April 16 from 11:45 - 12:15. All Middle School students
  • Thursday, April 17 from 11:45 - 12:15. All Lower School students
Students have been practicing multiple forms of jumping in PE class: jump the shot, individual jump ropes, long ropes and Double Dutch. During the event, students will be split up by grade and then by class. Kindergarten and MAG will participate in long rope jumping. Students in third through ninth grades will have three 10-minute stations (individual ropes, jump the shot, and long rope or Double Dutch).

Our goal is to have 100 percent participation. This is a great opportunity for all Foote students to come together as a community and make a difference in the lives of children their own age who greatly need their help. It will also make students aware of the importance of a healthier heart. We are all looking forward to two great days of jumping.

Outdoor Education Conference at Foote - April 26

Stop & Shop Rewards Program

Thank you to everyone who registered a Stop & Shop card to earn rewards for Foote this year. The A+ School Rewards Program has now ended. The small rewards we each earned with every purchase have been added up, and together we earned a grand total of $3,613.52 for Foote. This money will help cover the costs of field trips, required summer reading books, the Book Fair's ice cream social, and other important activities for Foote students. Next September, you will have to re-register your card (Stop & Shop's rule, not ours). In the meantime, you can still help Foote by purchasing Stop & Shop "Cash for Causes" gift cards at the front desk. For every $100 card you buy, Foote earns $5. Thanks again for your participation.
DayInLifeA DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOOTE
Getting to Know... Hayden Holt
Part of a series of short interviews with Foote faculty and staff.

Hayden Holt
Modern Language Chair & Spanish Teacher
Years at Foote: 1
Lives in: North Branford

WHERE DID YOU LEARN SPANISH?
What really sparked my interest was when I was 14 and did a Spanish immersion program in Mexico. I went for a summer and lived with a family who had three boys, so I was housed in this little casita out back. Every meal we sat together with a dictionary at the table. We spoke very little English.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING AT FOOTE?
I love the spectrum of grades, the sense of community. I love how much the young students look up to and admire the older students, and how they embrace that learning opportunity.

WHAT'S SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I traveled the world when I was 21 on a semester at sea. I went to 10 countries in three months, including Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Egypt, Italy, Morocco and back to Miami. That was pretty incredible.

WHAT'S THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain. As a language teacher, you really try to turn everyone into an extrovert and sometimes you have to realize it's okay for kids to be quiet, or sit alone and not always be working in groups.

NOW THE HARDEST QUESTION: PEPE'S, SALLY'S OR MODERN?
Pepe's without a doubt. And in Branford, I would go to Marco's.
Islamic Art and History Come Alive in NYC
Ninth graders are studying the Middle East in their Comparative Cultures class, and they took a field trip to New York City this week that blended art and history. Students visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and toured its impressive collection of Islamic art. Afterward, they ate lunch at a Middle Eastern restaurant near the museum. Here are a few photos snapped by faculty and students on the trip.

Foote's Got Talent

Fourth graders organized a talent show on March 27 in the Sandine Theater to showcase their myriad abilities - from singing to sword fighting. There were vocal performances, tap dancing, Indian dancing (video clip below), a live advertisement for a made-up product, and a high-energy kung fu demonstration (video clip below.) In all, 17 fourth graders participated in the talent show, as performers, lighting assistants and helpers. Fourth grade teacher Denise Quinn says the organizers showed persistence and dedication in putting on the event, working since October to make it happen. Bravo!

March Madness in the Hosley Gym

The annual faculty vs. ninth grade basketball game was a spirited affair in the Hosley Gym last Fri., March 28. Students showed great  sportsmanship, taking on teachers and staff with teamwork and hustle. In the end, the faculty team edged the students by a score of 34 to 25. Everyone had so much fun, that both teams stayed after the final buzzer to play a "bonus" game.
