Welcoming Our Chinese Guest Teacher

Students gathered for the Opening Assembly in the Hosley Gymnasium on Tues., Sept. 10, and met a special new member of the Foote School community: Chinese guest teacher Huang Qiong, better known by her American nickname, Hannah.

Hannah received a warm welcome and showed pictures of her many new adventures since arriving in America: whale watching with ninth graders off Cape Cod, camping, kayaking, sailing - even using a wheelbarrow for the first time. Her message to students: "Don't be afraid, just try it. Keep trying every day."

Hannah chairs the English Department at Yali Middle School in Changsha, China.
Ninth graders kicked off the assembly with a skit about Falco's PRIDE.
Falco got a rock star's welcome.
Not to be outdone, Hannah fired up the crowd.
And Kindergartners received stuffed Falcos from ninth graders.

A Day in the Life of Foote - A Cultural Exchange, Via Skype
Third graders participated in a live video chat, via Skype, with a third grader half a world away on Thurs., Sept. 12. Foote students met Harrison, the 8-year-old son of Chinese guest teacher Huang Qiong, aka Hannah.

The kids exchanged songs: Harrison sang the ABC song in English, and Foote third graders sang a Chinese song that translates to "One Pug." Harrison also played piano for the Foote students, who watched him on a big screen in the Middle School computer lab.

Students lined up to ask Harrison about his favorite subject in school (music), his favorite soccer team (Barcelona) and how the Chinese celebrate birthdays (eating cake.)
When it was time to say goodbye, the kids rushed the laptop to get on camera and wave goodbye to their new friend.
