My youngest brother, sister-in-law and nephew came to visit a few weeks ago. It is always a joy to see them, and to reconnect with the two year old who is, of course, adorable.
I had invited them for dinner and they made a special request: please make roasted vegetables. I was happy to oblige but more than a little curious why they wanted this dish. It is nothing special...just veggies roasted with a little oil: anyone can make them.
It turns out that they were not making them...nor much of anything. They both complained of long hours at work and when they got home the last thing they wanted to do was cook. They mainly bought pre-packaged foods or take-out meals. They were craving something homemade and healthy, and knew I could provide both.
I had heard this so many times at Weight Watchers meetings over the years that this revelation should not have been terribly surprising. But I was a bit taken aback, given that my brother went to culinary school and at one time was a personal chef.

JAMIE OLIVER VS MCDONALD'S
Chef Jamie Oliver has been fighting the fast food industry for many years, and is one of my heroes. He has successfully gotten McDonald's to stop using "pink slime" for their hamburgers. I hope I have successfully gotten most of you off the fast food bandwagon, but for those of you still indulging...read this. And even those of you who do not go near fast food places, this is worth a read. This man is a trailblazer and is fighting an uphill battle against the food industry. It just goes to show that one person CAN make a difference.

TAO PORCHON-LYNCH...OLDEST YOGA TEACHER AND EXCELLENT DANCER TO BOOT!
I have written about this woman before, but recently two things were sent to me about her. At 96 she is the oldest living yoga teacher and she appears to also have talent in dancing as well. Here is an interview on the secrets of staying young, and below is a video of her swing dancing.
She is another hero of mine (heroine?). I want to be her when I grow up...

TRADER JOE'S HEALTHIEST FROZEN OPTIONS
I am not sure who put together this list but it leaves off some of my favorites. (Check out the Soy Ginger Cod or the White Fish Vera Cruz), and they put in silly things, like frozen mushrooms...But there are a few interesting items on here I am going to try, and thought y'all might be curious about.

BIKE SKILLS IMPROVEMENT CLASSES
We were calling these Beginner's Bike Classes, but are finding there are many folks who are not beginners but want some basic knowledge of their bikes, how they work, how to feel more confident riding, etc... Classes are Every Friday 11am -12:30 pm A new series starts the first Friday of each month, but you can join the class at any point and take a single class or the series. We cover everything from the very basics (how to actually ride a bike) to how to use your gearing, how to brake, how to deal with traffic, cross streets, and other road etiquette. You'll learn some basic skills like changing a tire and little fixes you can do yourself. The first 10-20 minutes of each class are inside, discussing various bike issues. Each week is different. The rest of the class will be in the parking lot on bikes and on the Joe Rodota trail where we will ride as far as the group feels comfortable riding. These classes are designed to get anyone and everyone who wants to ride on a bike. If you have a bike you can bring your own. If you do not you can rent one from us. The hope is that people who take these classes feel more comfortable getting out and riding, and that they meet like minded folks in the class who are at their same level so they could ride together. The surest way to getting out on a regular basis is to have friends you ride with. $15/SINGLE CLASS or $50/4 CLASSES bring your own bike, or if you would like to rent a cruiser bike:$15/SINGLE CLASS RENTAL or $50/4 CLASSESOh, and did you know biking burns TWICE AS MANY CALORIES AS WALKING??
