RE-COMMITMENT
I got on the scale last week, as I do almost every day, and it gave me a number I did not like. It's not the first time I have seen it, but previously I chalked it up to a) the scale is acting up, or b) I ate salty food last night, or some other rationale for that ugly line I had crossed over.
But this time I knew I had been building up to this place for awhile. I've just gotten complacent in this weight maintenance thing: something which is profoundly easy to do, as I imagine more than a few of you know. A little more on my plate at mealtime, little things like butter on my bread: something I swore off years ago, or a couple of handfuls of chips or nuts here and there, which are in the house for my husband. Even though I don't drink I was taking sips of my husband's beer now and again. But the worst has been an insane addiction to, of all things, dried mango, which I was consuming by the carload. Combined I have watched my weight climb close to 10 lbs since I initially went to work for Weight Watchers 13 years ago. It's painful, but true. Ironically I am the fittest and healthiest I have ever been, so I cannot blame my exercise habits for this gain: it lies squarely with inappropriate and over-consumption of favorite foods.
So I have decided to cut back. Just cut back. I am not "going on a diet", nor am I doing anything really radical, other than eliminating certain foods and decreasing the amount I eat on others.

RECIPES
Even though the sun has been shining now and again in this area of the country, it is still chilly and winter, and this calls for rich, hearty soups which fill you up and warm you up.I like soups which are full of protein and veggies, so they can fulfill both of those categories our bodies need. I went digging for my favorite lentil soup recipe and came across another amazing-sounding lentil soup recipe I thought should be shared as well. So this newsletter we honor the underused and under-appreciated lentil, which if you have not really had them, you are missing out! CLASSIC LENTIL SOUP WITH TOASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS

As many of you know I am a huge fan of Zumba, which is somewhat like aerobics, but the music and movements are based in world beat, so you're dancing to a lot of Latin, Reggae, rhythmic fun sounds. The routines are simple and movements repeat throughout the song. Zumba is taught everywhere! I mean EVERYWHERE!! All over the world! Every teacher has their own style, and you may tell yourself this might be hard on your knees or back, or whatever, but it is very easy to modify all the moves so pretty much everyone can do it. There are people in classes I attend who are just learning to dance or move, have physical limitations, or are advanced seniors! In fact recently the average age of my classes is definitely increasing. I think lots of us older folks are remembering how much we love to dance, and this workout is all about dancing. Below I will tell you about the few teachers I have been fortunate to find locally, but I am putting a link below which will allow you to find the Zumba classes near you. I am including this in the newsletter to encourage all of you to give this wonderful workout a try. If you can't dance it will teach you how to without really trying. I swear, anyone can do this!!! KELLY STELLINGKelly owns Annadel Fitness on Montgomery in Santa Rosa, and she teaches most days of the week. She favors contemporary pop, and of course Latin rhythms. What I love about her classes is her routines are fun and easy, yet challenging. Easy to learn because she uses very few steps per routine, but always a great workout because she makes them hard, if you want to really push it. However lots of people modify. Her class is always packed with enthusiastic followers.
EVELYN LOONEYI recently discovered this firecracker of a Costa Rican woman and am simply in love with her classes. She focuses mainly on Latin rhythms and moves, and her routines are great fun and not terribly complicated, also very easy to modify. She teaches throughout the area, including Sebastopol (Coaches Corner), 24 Hr Fitness in Santa Rosa and Petaluma, and other locations too. RAULY DUENASI have not had the opportunity to take Rauly's classes in a few years and I miss him. He mixes Zumba with Hip Hop so his music and moves are quite different from other teachers. He is an exceptional dancer so inspiring to watch and attempt to mimic. And despite the fact his workouts are more dance-centric than a lot of other teachers (i.e.: more dancey, less aerobic), his classes are filled with seniors, people just learning, etc. His energy is infectious! The link to the site below will give you some information which is correct and some which needs updating. Please check with each instructor or facility to make sure the class you plan to try is happening...And Happy Zumba!!!

THE PALEO DIET SEEN BY MICHAEL POLLAN
Author of "Omnivore's Dilemma" amongst other tomes in the food world, Michael Pollan once again challenges how people view diets and points out where we go wrong. I am in agreement with him 100%.

10 COKES A DAY
This man experimented for 30 days to see what would happen if he consumed 10 cokes a day. He admitted this was excessive and most people do not do this, but he points out that most energy drinks, other sodas, sports drinks and juice all have similar sugar content and calories, so if you drink multiple bottled drinks per day you are consuming similar amounts of sugar. Pretty shocking...

BEGINNER'S BICYCLING CLASSES!! CLASSES BEGIN FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH!! SIGN UP FOR A 1 MONTH SERIES!
Have you been reading my posts about riding a bike and thinking how you'd like to do that but you have no idea how to begin? Maybe you never learned as a child, or it has been 30 years since you climbed on a bike. Or maybe you have a teeny bit of knowledge but feel you would benefit from a few classes. Well here's the plan... Beginner's Bike Classes at Sebastopol Bike Center will begin Friday, February 6th. 11am -12:30 pm These will be once a week, one and a half hour class + ride which will repeat monthly, so a new series will start the first Friday of each month. We will cover everything from the very basics (how to actually ride a bike) to how to use your gearing, how to brake, how to deal with traffic, cross streets, and other road etiquette. You'll learn some basic skills like changing a tire and little fixes you can do yourself. The first 10-20 minutes of each class will be inside, discussing various bike issues, watching videos, etc. Each week will be different. The rest of the class will be in the parking lot on bikes and on the Joe Rodota trail where we will ride as far as the group feels comfortable riding. These classes are designed to get anyone and everyone who wants to ride on a bike. If you have a bike you can bring your own. If you do not you can rent one from us. The hope is that people who take these classes feel more comfortable getting out and riding, and that they meet like minded folks in the class who are at their same level so they could ride together. The surest way to getting out on a regular basis is to have friends you ride with. $15/SINGLE CLASS or $50/4 CLASSES bring your own bike, or if you would like to rent a cruiser bike:$15/SINGLE CLASS RENTAL or $50/4 CLASSESOh, and did you know biking burns TWICE AS MANY CALORIES AS WALKING?? SIGN UP TODAY!!
