HOW OLD ARE YOU REALLY?
A couple of weeks ago I turned 60. It is a big number. I have thought much about how long I have been on this planet and all that I have learned, and continue to learn. I feel stronger, healthier, wiser, more sure of myself now than I ever have, and it is sinking in that I have actually built the life I imagined long ago. The path to this place was often rocky, confusing, and downright scary, but somehow I got here.
A few days ago a friend posted an article on Facebook which really hit me in the wrong place. It basically claimed that this whole "60 is the new 40" business, is a load of hooey. Her assertion was based on the way she was treated as an older woman. She saw all around her the response to her age in the way she is communicated with, minimized, etc. She claimed that it is irrelevant how you feel about your age, others will treat you like an old person. Therefore this concept is false.
I will not deny that seniors get a bad rap. In general they are perceived to be slower, less intelligent, less capable, frail and fragile. Many people in our culture ignore their elders, or minimize their importance. I imagine many of us have these prejudices because for some seniors the above is true. Our parents and grandparents generations had a much different attitude about health and fitness than we do today, and hence at 80 some are of diminished capacity, often in multiple ways.
But today we know so much more, and those of us 60 plus were the first to have the full gift of this awareness. We now know what foods to eat and not eat. We now know how physical activity impacts every aspect of our lives. We have been given the tools to be healthier and live longer than any generation before us.

Recipes
The tomatoes are coming in for some of us and so I thought I would make them the theme of this newsletter recipe section. But I was also thinking how it can be hard to get kids to eat them, so both these recipes include cheese, which can win over many a picky eater. And I found the second recipe quite intriguing as it uses bok choy in a non-Asian dish...different!

BRINGING ART TO LIFE
What a brilliant concept the Rijksmuseum Museum in Holland had to bring a piece of art to life by staging the scene at a busy mall. I loved this!

Yep, its that time again...the festival is a little more than a month away and the excitement is heating up!! This year the tasting has grown considerably, as have the amount of artists. The site will have a whole new layout and because it is our 20th anniversary we are having a concert on Saturday night as well, featuring blues legend Robben Ford, and opening for him will be local favorite, Eric Lindell. There is still room for wineries or breweries to participate in the tasting, and we are always seeking volunteers if you would like to help us out and get in for free. Tickets are on sale now so if you want to save some buckage, buy in advance. If you have never been let me tell you it is in a gorgeous location, with an excellent selection of healthy and dangerous food, a large tasting, 3 stages of awesome entertainment, and an art/craft marketplace which blows away any seen in this county. We are fortunate to get artists from all over the country. There's kid stuff, a large dance floor..AND IT IS A BENEFIT! We benefit Stewards of the Coast & Redwoods (the non-profit which works in conjunction with the State Parks in this area), and the Bodega Volunteer Fire Department. So great fun for great causes! www.bodegaseafoodfestival.com
